banana-ized doepfer and analogue systems
2002-06-24 by matt wilson
greetings:
phase one of this project is completed.
i installed banana jacks in 2 (each) doepfer and analogue systems modules,
which was a piece of cake, particularly for the AS units, which both had
separate PCBs as mounts for the 1/8" jacks. the doepfer units had the jacks
mounted on the main PCB and things were a bit tight, but no problem. here is
a pic:

both firms use the same incredibly cheap plasticky jacks. the AS jacks were
easily removed by simply unscrewing the retainer nuts; the doepfer jacks
needed a little heat from the solder gun, which pretty much decimated them.
cheapo city.
johnson banana jacks fit right into both brands' holes with no mod needed.
next, i built a little power distribution buss board. i only have a blacet
15v PS, so i built a 12v stepdown unit into the board. it doesn't look good
but works great. the new buss board has a ground lug which connects to the
ground jack on the back of the serge PS.
obviously, doepfer and AS don't fit into a frac rack without modification.
since i had the frac rac and a blacet EG in the works (and a craig anderton
filter homebrew jobbie), i decided not to buy anything new to rack the new
modules. instead, i force-fed them into the frac rac by drilling new holes
in both the rack and the modules. again, not really pretty, but works.
next is building the blacet EG, which will requiring reaming out the jack
holes to accomodate the larger bananas. again, this won't be a problem.
this little project is certainly relevant to recent discussions bemoaning
the lack of individual modules from serge; its not much of an issue,
provided you've got the time/desire/materials, to adapt the existing brands
to conform with the serge standard.
