Old Serge versus Newer STS panels...

Old Serge versus Newer STS panels...

2002-10-21 by sydilaxe

I used to have a '78 voice panel . It was usable and had a slightly different
tonality than the newer panels (woodier with stability issues); however, it was
significantly less reliable than my 97 STS panels. I ended up selling it. I
hope that the buyer of the 8 panel system on E-bay is aware of what he or she
invested in. I guess that there is some collectable mystique to the older
vintage Serge systems; however, I am an active user and prefer the stability
and build quality of the newer panels. Older Serge (even the yellowing
paper covered panels) do not have the rarity or individuality of say a Buchla
system. I would not pass on a few extra older panels if I ever saw them at the
right price; however, sellers seem to feel that these retain value.

Other than a few discontinued modules, does anyone see any benefits to the
older Serge over post 90's STS built panels?

I can't comment on the ethics of pulling an auction the day before it is
completed. Maybe people should turn this guy in, if it truly is a grievous
violation of policy. If I were interested in a panel or two from the system, I
would be more upset. However, I would much rather save and invest the
money in a newer custom panel or some Modcan.

What's the problem? The guy who sold the 8 panel system kept sayin' it was
completely refurbished by STS in '96. If that's true then the only problems should
be cosmetic, yes?

Well, STS refurbed my '78 panel in '97. I noticed differences between it and a
newer STS panel. Roxanne cleaned it and replaced some caps, but left it
pretty much untouched. She mentioned that she didn't particularly like
working on the older systems due to their inconsistencies. If they made
component swaps or upgraded the circuit boards on the 8 panel system, then
the only differences would be cosmetic. However, the only way to verify this
would be for the owner to have a STS tech look at the system again. Are the
older boards dated?

I've seen boards from 1978 with the round paper date
labels, so yes. I'm not sure when this started...
