My First Sony..Er..Serge!

My First Sony..Er..Serge!

2002-11-20 by Derrick

Hey everyone, Well I have been contemplating for some time getting a
Serge panel for use exclusively as an audio processor.. and since i
do sound design i figured it would be a great "...first step into a
larger world" .. I am a bit confused though about a few things.. I
noticed that the Soup Kitchen appears to be a processing only panel.
Would this be something that might help? WHat do these stand alone
panels cost? Can Anyone recomend the a config if not this one, that
would be great for audio processing.. oh yeah, it must have the
Frequency Shifter and the Wilson Analog Delay... All and any help
would be most appreciated.. Anyone in the SF Bay Area own a Serge
system? I would be interested in seeing and hearing one of these
first hand before I decide. Thanks alot

I have also been looking into wiard as well so if anyone can help me
compare ....

Thanks,

Derrick Espino

The Soup Kitchen and The Soup 2 are both processing panels. If you
want Frequency Shifter [FRS] and Wilson Analog Delay [WAD] then the
soup kitchen is a great way to go. The panel is very powerful and
extremely fun to play with. I believe it would cost around $3500
bcaues the FRS and WAD are some of the pricer Serge Modules. You
also need to get a power supply. Look at the EGRES web page for
details.

The Wiard is also a very powerful and entertaining system to use, but
you won't get the [FRS] or [WAD] with it. The Waveform City is a
very fun module to process sounds with and both filters (Borg and
Omni)sound great.

I work for both companies and would LOVE to see you order from both,
but given your application i think the Soup Kitchen would fulfill
your needs best.

Another nice combination would be the Soup Kitchen panel and a Modcan
Rack. I have been using some the newer modules and must say that they are
spectacular. The Wilson Analog Delay seems to be ideal for short delay
times (physical modelling applications) and CV manipulation whereas the
Modcan Super Delay is optimized for longer audio delays (up to a very
grungy 8 seconds). You can also manually control the filtering of the BBD
aliasing for other interesting tonal explorations. The Vector Fade is another
module that I am finding uses for in almost every patch. It is great for
manually panning through variations of a sound, etc. I also second the
Miniwave...it is insanely useful. Recently I have been using it to modulate
self-resontating filters (which creates lovely little melodies BTW).

Good luck on your decision!

Ben
