Serge discography?

Serge discography?

2003-09-28 by John Papiewski

I've been in the process of piecing together a discography of people who
used the Serge, need help. Any info, pointers, hints as always appreciated.

Frank Zappa apparently had one. Does anybody know the recording(s)?
I have some names here of people & groups, but again would like to know
where they used the Serge.
Vince Clarke
Roger Powell
Moby
Skinny Puppy
Michael Stearns
Kevin Braheny - Galaxies? The Way Home?
TONTO - Stevie Wonder - Who else used/uses TONTO?

Thanks

John P.

feel free to add:

Richie Hawtin

Stanley Cowell 'Talkin' Bout Love LP "STANLEY COWELL: piano, Fender Rhodes and
Yamaha electronic pianos, Mini-Moog and Serge Tcherepinin Modular
synthesizer(series 79)"

myself :-) (most of my commercially released material since 98 features Serge)

TONTO (and therefore Serge) users:

Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson ('77-'80)

Richie Havens ('In These Flames' from The Great Blind Degree - maybe pre-Serge
though)

Tonto's Expanding Head Band (1st album 'Zero Time' maybe pre-Serge VCO's, but
2nd album maybe Serge custom VCO era)

Quincy Jones (Body Heat LP?)

Isley Brothers (3+3, The Heat Is On, Fight the Power, Harvest for the World)

America (track: Molten Love)

Bobby Womack

Weather Report (Tale Spinnin' LP - 1975)

Doobie Brothers: The Captain & Me

and apparently Stephen Stills, Joan Baez, Dave Mason, Little Feet too...

I just checked the album sleeve - no mention of TONTO despite the
claims on a Margouleff & Cecil (the original owners of TONTO) website
interview... just says "ARP Synthesizer programming by Margouleff &
Cecil"... maybe it was TONTO maybe not... the year is 1974... what
year did Serge install the custom built VCO's in TONTO?

My guess it was around 1975 - 76.

It's a surprisingly short list or releases for a synth that has been
in some sort of production for 30 years.

Surely there must be hundreds of Serges out there - why are
they making so little noise?

Comments?

Fear not - I am certain that there are hundreds of releases utilizing Serge
equipment - we just don't know about them as musicians and composers who do
aren't required to report the event!

If the list is short, it's because it's far from complete and it will be a
gargantuan task to make it so. Pretty much impossible if you ask me.

Add one more to the list:

Chas Smith. LA based composer and instrument designer, who's done a few
releases on the Cold Blue label over the last 10 or so years on both vinyl
and CD, His Serge is easily 24 years old and it equipped with a disgusting
amount of VCOs - like 20 of them or something, as Chas' trademark are sound
masses.

While this particular release in mostly done on instruments of his own
design, I HIGHLY recommend his Nikko Wolverine CD. Incredible.

Let it be known that some where doing ambient work while Eno was still
bashing out chords with Roxy Music and Chas was one of them. A master.

Antenne

http://www.antenne.suite.dk

i've got a single panel since 97
that i've used on these releases:
( not all serge, but at least one serge track on each song.. )

Amstrong - Sprinkler
Antenne - #1
Antenne - #2
+ diverse remixes, soundtracks, post-pro-backgrounds etc

config:

PRNV - NTO - PCO - RING - VCM - AMX - VCFQ - DTG - UAP

not much i know, but very useful for processing external sounds

back to lurking.. Kim
