Serge reliability poll

Serge reliability poll

2004-04-04 by Ken Stone

I put a vote in as many problems - some solved, but thought I should
clarify.
It's from 1973, and Serges don't get much older. It was "student"
built. It has travelled the world, got lost by the airline etc.

It's two remaining problems - 1 dead VCO and one dead VCF can really
only be addressed by replacement of the boards, as these suckers are
resin encased.

All things considered, it's a tough little beastie.

Wow, I didn't know they ever did that. interesting.

Not to mention trampled by miniature ponies from time to time, yes? :-)

Hi Ken,

I've seen some 20 year old heavily used serges so that's why I put in
the option problems due to age/heavy use.
1973 huh! I didn't know they went back further than '75. Don't know
what year it was when they built them on the Calarts balcony.

Thanks

Well, considering the first year that building was open was 1792, it
couldn't have been much older than that!

Here's three scans I did of my panels some time back, with the dates
on them:

http://www.cgs.synth.net/synth/serge/pic/2_f.jpg
bottom right - Serge Tcherepnin 1973
You will notice the sequencer layout is different too.

http://www.cgs.synth.net/synth/serge/pic/5_f.jpg
bottom center - Center for music experement etc 1973

http://www.cgs.synth.net/synth/serge/pic/6_f.jpg
ST '73 written in the Bi-di switches

I guess this must have been done very soon after the panel graphics
were designed, as the first batch had somewhat dubious and vary
varied markings, according to what I've read. Three modules in this
one (peak and trough) are built on matrix boards too.

It should be back. I moved a piece of furniture and unplugged a cable.
Thanks for letting me know...
