interesting that the Crown D series gets mentioned. My Hafler replaced a Crown for awhile. Next to the Hafler, the Crown didn't sound all that pleasing. I think it was just underpowered. I've heard D 150s that sounded ok.
Seems like Bryston is the amp of choice for most, followed by Hafler.

One of the first comments noted the Event PS8 s ?? powered and unpowered?? It was mentioned that they had excellant "imaging" What is imaging?? Is that what us oldtimers used to call "spread"or "depth of field"??? For the work i do, "spread" is a most desired element right along with midrange clarity. So i think the combination i do end up with will be strong in both these catagories.
Where i live, there is one Bryson dealer. If i stick with the 4312 's then i'm set. But if a change of speaker is neccessary, then things become a little more difficult. Here in PDX we just don't have many places that carry a wide range of speakers. In fact, most places (3) including GC carry the same four or five speaker lines so it's impossible to test drive anything other than the ones that are getting the bulk of the advertising "dollar push" these days. KRK, JBL, EVENT,GENELEC,BLUE SKY..... yada yada woof woof. Like in the old days with cars where you could have any color you wanted as long as it was black, here where i live you can have anything you want just as long it's one of those five or six. Then of course there is the problem that nobody will let you take a pair home to demo in your own environment. Of course there is the large "giggle" factor when i put on a copy of Hells Canyon, turn it up loud and watch the looks of horror on the sales staff, not to mention hapless customers who might be standing around. Again, many thanks to all who offered there considered opinion.

I used a kit-built DH-200 for many years as my home stereo power amp,
until I got some Apogee ribbon speakers that the Hafler wouldn't drive.
After that the Hafler went into the studio, where it remained until it
died.
I used to see a fair number of those single-rack-space Crown D-series
amps in studios where huge power wasn't needed. I think they've been
around since Gondwanaland; don't know if they're still considered
worthwhile.
And I also wonder if one of the smaller Adcom amps would work well in
this application.
