Fading noise & Zombie WAD
2006-02-08 by John P
Don't know if I already posted about this... but some time ago I noticed
that white/pink noise output didn't seem as hot as it used to.. was it
my imagination?
A couple conversations with Rex Probe shed some light on what was going
on... my nearly ten-year-old system's noise source diode had changed
internally. Semiconductors don't last forever (??!!) ... materials
slowly and microscopically migrate over time.
Long story short, with a new noise diode in, it's hot and sizzling again!
Oh, one other thing that was bugging my system... the WAD lost its output!
Was it dead? Turns out, no! Neither alive nor dead.... a Zombie WAD!!!
For reasons similar to the above noise problem, the carefully balanced /
biased delay lines in the WAD had tipped over with age. Rex suggested
I try tweeking some trim pots... crikey!! sounds good as new now!!!
That Rex, he sure knows how to fix stuff....
