Serge M-Class

2008-02-18 by matthew carpenter

Hi all,

As you're all no doubt aware, STS stopped taking custom panel orders back in June of 2007. What you may not be aware of is that there have been some exciting developments percolating beneath the surface at STS headquarters since well before that announcement. I'm pleased and very excited to announce the new Serge M-Class series from Sound Transform Systems.

What is it? Well, imagine the Serge modules you already know and love in a half-panel format -- we'll call these half-panels "M-odules -- and the modules, as they were previously known, comprise "function blocks" with individual "function cells", i.e., a DTG is a function block and a single TG is a function cell. Let's leave the new nomenclature for a moment so it can sink in and visit the tangible differences, now.

Rex has made a slew of changes under the hood and these include improvements to the designs, topologies, and circuits, across the board. Yes, there was still room for improvement, if you can believe it! Externally, very little has changed except for the new format, which, as I mentioned above, resembles half-panels, now known as "M-odules, joined in the center by a new power distribution scheme which incorporates the familiar PSD, indicator LEDs, a cool modulatable water-diffused blue LED, and eliminates the dangling power interconnection cables we're used to. A new, smaller, and custom-built power supply, the PS2a, is available to power 2 M-boats (each M-boat holds two "M-odules plus the new power distribution strip). It's also switchable for operation in Europe and will come with the appropriate power cable, as well. If you need to power more than this you can still opt for the PS4 or PS6.

Last, but not least, there are some new function block designs, such as the VC Timegen Oscillator, and VC Timegen Clock. Each is comprised of two distinct halves, or function cells. Two "M-odules incorporating these blocks are the "Creature" and "Sequencer" which, when combined, form a powerful mini-modular in a single M-boat. It's my understanding that these will be some of the first "M-odules available.

Well, now I'll turn it over to the list so we can get some discussion going. Undoubtedly, you have some questions, and we'll do our best to answer them.

Thanks for your attention,
Matt

Very interesting! I'm having some trouble picturing the new m-odule
layout in my minds eye. Is a picture or rendering available?

    Hi,
Rex tells me that high quality photos are coming soon. In the meantime, I think this should give a good idea of what a single M-Class M-odule looks like.

    Hi Matt

Does this mean we will have a choice of what goes into the M module block?
i.e 4x VC Time Gen Oscillators?

    Or are they fixed?

Ha! Well, James Maier, aka Carbon111, is going to put up a page on his site outlining the mini-modular 'm-odules, the Creature, Gator, Sequencer, and Sequencer-B (a 6 stage SQP) as soon as he's able.

Here are 3 more renderings. These 4 "M-odules (Creature, Gator, Sequencer A, Sequencer B) can be mixed and matched to create 3 distinct mini-modulars. We should see some photos of the Creature/Gator combo, tomorrow.

          2008-02-18 by Tim J

          List...

I just got an email from a fellow by the name of Harry with some info on the M-Class....

          Hello Tim,

The "Creature" & (his pal)"Gator" are available on the 1st of March
          and are 1,499 USD apiece.

The "M-boat", which carries the two M-class Modules, includes
the Power Distribution Network, and is 250 USD, as a table top
          Mini-Modular.

The [PS2a] Power Supply is a new, custom designed precision linear
(made in here in the good old USA)that goes for 200 USD

          There you go ...

          Have fun,

          Harry

Regarding the new STS M-Class M-odules...

          2008-02-19 by James

Aha! I see the cat is out of the bag now!

I've been talking with Rex about the new designs and am gathering the
information and materials to provide a number of new web resources for
          the new M-class modules.

I'll be authoring a number of webpages dedicated to the new Serge
          designs, starting with the Creature.

Specs, descriptions of functionality, tips & tricks as well as MP3s and
photos of the Creature in question will all be available.

Because of all the Serge-related webpages, they'll all get their own STS
Serge Index page on my server...I will keep you all posted. Hang tight!

          Very Best Regards, James Maier

Now then... what exactly are these new modules, the VC Timegen Osc and
          the VC Timegen Clock?

          2008-02-19 by matthew carpenter

          Hi Bob, all,

The [VC TimeGen Osc] function block has two cells:

The one on the left is free running with an overall "Freq" pot which goes
from 25 sec. to 8.5 KHz in full rotation. The VC range extends this for greater than 2 min to 11.5 kHz.

There are two CV inputs, both scaled exponentially : one approx 1v/oct and the other +/- scalable that affects the overall frequency, but leaves the two waveforms (see below) constant through the sweep.

The output waveforms are: Blue jack = inverted SAW wave with the
extremely fast rise time of 25 microseconds making it very "alive" (hence
voiced as what Rex says is 'the Creature's main male call') and the Red jack = 50% duty cycle square waveform with the rising edge voiced differently than the falling edge as is the sound of reed instruments (i.e. - bass clarinet). These were both specifically voiced by Rex and provide much for the filter to "chew" on.

The right cell of this function block is that of the DTG, but has a softer/smoother voicing while remaining sonically focused. This is the 'feminine' voices calling. According to Rex, the two together 'really make it happen'.

Information on the VC Timegen Clock is forthcoming...

          Matt

Now then... what exactly are these new modules, the VC Timegen Osc and
          the VC Timegen Clock?

The VC TimeGen Clock has the left cell Blue jack being an asymmetrical
triangle wave & Red jack being a 5o% duty cycle square wave output
which stays constant through the manual "freq' pot range in
combination with the "both" position selected w/ external CV. In
addition, you have the ability to modify the duty cycle (pulsewidth)
of the output(s) using external CV source from either the 'front' or
the 'back' of the pulse by selecting "Rise" or "Fall" on the CV source
select switch. This way you can create syncopation in the rhythm
patches & pulse width mod in the audio range use.

The right cell is like VC TimeGen Osc.

www.serge-fans.com looking for a few small donations...

          2008-03-21 by Les Mizzell

          Afternoon,

The yearly hosting bill (approx $20 a month), plus domain renewal just
came up for serge-fans. I go into "begging mode" each year when this
happens and am searching for a few small donations from the community so
I don't have quite as much out of pocket - though I certainly won't let
things lapse if nobody kicks in.

As in previous years - anybody donating will get their name listed as a
supporter on the index page (unless you request it not be put there).

          Paypal: lesmizz@...

          Most humble thanks,

          Les

          Hi Les,

Thanks for all you've done for us in the Serge world!
I'll send you out ten sawbucks for the kitty.

          Best to you,

          Hi all

I have just opened up the SSG and looked to replace the CA3080AE ( H9435)
          I only have CA3080E (H 9819)

Will be ale to use the CA3080E ? will it be safe?
