Diesel Digestion Track and Photo...

Diesel Digestion Track and Photo...

2008-03-31 by derwskee

After many years of lurking here I have finally uploaded an audio file
from my newly configured 2 panel system that I call "Diesel Digestion".
It is completely nontonal and random in real time...it just goes with
no input from me. What you hear is one pass with a bit of verb/delay
added to give it some air. There is a photo of the patch in the Dewskee
Photo folder. Kind of funny sounding. I can listing to this stuff and
always be surprised...

Thanks, Andrew. That's a great noodle! You're right, this patch sounds endlessly surprising... I could definitely listen to this for a long time before intervening, if at all.

Do you have different knobs on, by the way?

The reverb sounds nice, too. Do you mind sharing what you used?

Re: Diesel Digestion Track and Photo...

2008-04-01 by synpro@aol.com

To answer a couple of questions I recorded this into Garage Band and just added some of the stock reverb and a tiny bit of delay. I have the new Logic but could not for the life of me figure out how to get the audio inputs on my MacBook to work...it was using the built in mic! Getting too old to rummage around in menu hell...Garage Band and bingo...showed up.
I'll be posting a naked photo sans patch cords as my panels have a few extra bells a whistles plus custom old-school Buchla looking knobs. Kind of makes the Serge look like a cross between a Serge / Emu / Buchla modular.

The audio link is in Sound Files Folder here...http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/files/Sound%20Files%20/
The photo is in the Drews Noize Box folder here...http://launch.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/photos/browse/14e0

If there is interest from the group I'll post additional sound bites. Also, does anyone know if freeware for Mac or PC to convert MP4a to WAV?

Thanks!

Andrew

Hi Andrew..

Not sure if it’s just me, but my browser reads “File Not Found” when I click on any one of your track names.. The pics I can see fine.. But not the audio files..

Btw.. Should you ever need any help with Logic, pls feel free to email me directly.. I’m an Apple Pro Apps trainer.. I would be more than happy to assist.. And perhaps exchange some SERGE notes

Cheers
Yulian

Those look like Trig inputs/hard-sync inputs on the PCOs... Never
thought I'd see that! You must be very persuasive ;)
Also, I see a manual trigger on one of the SSGs, and White/Pink noise
outputs on the top 2RVG. I'm guessing you have SIG Ins on the DTG and
there's something extra on the top SSG I don't recognize. You always
had a way of choosing very useful mods!
Can't wait to see the naked pics.

YP> I believe you can do it with iTunes. Go to “Preferences”, under “Advanced” click on “Importing” and choose “WAV Encoder” as “Import Using:”, then right-click on the track in iTunes and choose “Convert Selection to WAV”

Hi Andrew,

I was wondering if you could share some tips on patching these sorts
of self-running 'noodles'.

While experimenting is definitely part of the fun, I thought it'd be
worthwhile to hear about some of yours or others techniques for
designing generative patches like this.

I've found the Sequencers, BLOG, and crossfading different amplitude
and frequency envelopes provided by DTGs to be useful for this sort of
thing.

Re: Diesel Digestion Track and Photo...

Ok, sure. The main source for these kinds of patches comes from the
use of the Dual Random Generators Smooth and Stepped (an amazingly
useful/powerful module) and N Comps all of which I have two of. It
also has a LOT to do with some significant cross modulation of one
random source by another which can get weird really fast.

Also, using the same random output voltage from the generator that is
triggering the envelopes to shorten the decay as the voltages
increase. This way as the random triggers are being sent out and
speed up, the decay of a trans gen or Slope gen gets shorter as well
so you get those little flurry or burst of notes/tones.

I select either the smooth or stepped voltages depending on what is
being modulated and I send the random signals all over the place. I
also use the ring mod and top section of the wave mult as dynamic
VCA's so you can ge varying amounts of modulation to some sources.

Of course making one thing go positive while the same mod source is
going negative into some other input is great. Using the N Comp I
will set up the bottom sections of the Smooth Stepped as S&H but they
will receive differing pulses based on the divided trigger output of
the N Comp which too is being modulated with some random signal.

So the Stepped sections become additional random sources which gives
me SIX random voltages that are again, sent all over the place and
are inter-modulating each other...no rules! I often use the top
sections of the Smooth Stepped as Tri or square LFO/Audio mod sources.

The careful combination of LFO and audio rate modulation adds
diversity and sometimes I feedback the audio output of say the filter
into a ring mod along with some other signal to create a new
composite audio that is related to the original but is treated
differently.

Lastly, audio rate modulation of filters, vcas and osc freq is
totally cool. The thing that makes the Serge so great is the fact
that any signal can be a mod or audio signal which allows you to
think way outside the box as well as the ability to take any output
and send it to any number of inputs.

Hope this is helpful in some ways. I have yet to get anything
remotely tonal out of my Serge even after what, 18 years of owning it
in one form or another...

Thanks -- That was very insightful/helpful, indeed!

Why go tonal when you can go mental!?

I just bought a Buchla 200e so it will be great playing the 2 together ,
totally different sounds.

Super stuff, dripping with goodness! thank amnesia!
also been checking out your AFG vids.
i received mine last week (day after my wave proc arrived)
haven't pulled myself off the serge to check it out much yet.
in any event thanks for posting all that great stuff.

ok i can see from the photo what modules you have,,can you tell us?
Have you changed the knobs?
what knobs did you use?

did you sell the first 2 panel serge to get the later one?

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
