It's coming...soon

Hi Guys,

It took a lot of hassles to get the money in Rex account, but the
third attempt did the trick!
So Rex can deliver the Creature and Triple osc, which should be coming
in a couple of weeks. Far away from Wisconsin USA travelling by air
across the world to Maastricht here in the Netherlands!
It's really gonna happen.
I'm so excited.

And yes Rex is really a nice guy, who's always thinking with you and
always thinking ahead.

Cheers,

Roel

I contemplated exactly that pairing. I think it's going to be a
superb system!

the trip osc + creature are in awesome pair imo.
you'll be very happy i'm sure.
my mayhem arrived a week or so ago + i'm totally digin' it.
Dr. Rx definitely has the right prescription going.

Thanks.
I'm wondering how FM will sound with Serge oscillators?

The NTO had pretty decent linear FM, if I recall correctly.

From what I've heard, the FM sounds of the PCO and NTO are *amazing*.
That's what's missing most from my current system.
The only thing I don't like about the triple osc + creature is that
you might not have enough mixers. It depends what you want to do, of
course, but with so many waveforms in the system, I can imagine
wanting to do a lot of mixing. Maybe you already have lots of mixers
in your other systems ....

Hi Hans,

I'm sure of it.
The Mayhem is also on my list. Especially since it has white noise.
Do you know which other M-odule has noise as source?
I expect that the Creature can produce noise too, since the SSG has a
s&h generator which is logically feed by noise.

I wish you many rich endeavours with your new toys!

Cheers,

Roel

Hi Chris,

Can you describe soundwise the difference between exponential and
linear FM?
On a non-modulair synth as the Virus A FM sounds superb! The range of
sounds it can produce is amazing diverse!

Linear FM changes timbre more than pitch. It bypasses the exponential
convertor of an oscillator, and just modulates the frequency of the
oscillator. If you have two oscillators set to the same pitch, and
have on linear FM-ing the other, the oscillator that is being
modulated (the carrier) sweeps the harmonic series as the depth of the
linear FM increases. When the ratio of pitches of the two oscillators
is itself harmonic, you get harmonic sidebands.

Exponential FM creates inharmonic sidebands, more or less no matter
what you do.

They both have their uses.

If you have Max/MSP 5 I could send you a simple little patcher that
illustrates the difference.

OK, here it is. Note that the pitch changes as well as the timbre as
you turn up the exponential FM, while it's mostly the timbre that
changes when you turn up the linear FM.

I don't have Serge, but did look the available panels carefully. It
seems, that either CV Processor or CV Matrix Mixer would be necessary
to get enough mixing functions for my needs. There seems to be shortage
of VCA:s too - even when taking multi-function modules into account.

I have a two panel custom system and have no dedicated audio or CV
mixers but I don't do tonal stuff. I do have a Dual Channel Stereo
Output mixer and a Crossfader module with a 1/4 output but that be it.
Those along with the multiple inputs to the Filter and the VCA
capability of the top Wave Mult and Ring Mod I get by.

Most modules, especially the Osc has multiple inputs and at least one
with input scaling and inversion so you can get a lot happening. With
everything being banana based there is little distinction between what
is "audio" and what is "CV". You can get cats AND dogs copulating
unlike the Buchla 200e where there is a pretty stong distinction though
I did make some banana to 1/8" cords and in some cases it works ok.

It is REALLY interesting to be playing with my new small 200e as with
just (4) modules I can get lots happening; Complex Osc, Source of
Uncertainty, Quad Function and Quad Dynamics. The Morph Filter is TRES'
cool too....really! Very different responses than the Serge.

Andrew (soon to be known as "Electronic Waste Product")

Re: It's coming...soon

Thanks for this explanation. It's really helpfull.
I have tried Linear FM with the High end osc. from the Doepfer A100,
but meaby I did something wrong, but I couldn't hear much difference
between Exponential and Linear FM? That and I couldn't get excited
about the results. I try this with your example again and when I have
the Serge I can compare the two of them.

So when I understand it correctly, the main goal of Linear FM is to
change the timbre, which means that if you want to get new sounds,
Linear FM can lead to other results dan Exponential FM. You also said
it changes the pitch, but how much, you can actually hear the
changing of the pitch?

What's Max/MSP 5?

At extremes, yes you can hear a pitch change, but there is a large
range of interesting timbres with no pitch change in a good linear FM
implementation.
