Does anyone here have both Serge and Modcan?
How do they compare?
see the list archives, donald, for some, ahem, less than scientific
comparisons (and that's a very self deprecating "ahem" folks ;^)!matt, your SMOG moderator

Very different 'sound'/ osc and filters etc.
operationally / aesthetically very similar. (in form) No doubt they use the
"Tcherepnin" design.I do have some Modcan stuff mic. modules sitting around I'd trade for a
serge or motm stuff.Where r u? your welcome over 4 a 'shoot-out'
i'm looking 4ward to a serge/modcan knock down prize fight this weekend, so aside from all my grumblings
in the past on this list, i'll finally be able to put my patch cord were my mouth is.even funnier: if the modcan envelope module passes muster, i'll be ordering 1. why? i need another envelope,
NOW, and i don't need a whole panel from STS and won't wait. so if modcan is going to be "filling in the gaps"
where serge gear trails, then that's the facts. i can handle it.robbie, have u got a modcan env module u'll part with? paypal awaits u.

IMO the Modcan Env are great...I like them alot. Very snappy dadsr. They
pop....have nice rise + fall...etc. Still not like a gunshot.... like on
the Selector stuff.

i'm jabbing it with my right elbow. bad synth! you don't want to know what that modular had to submit to during the show...
groping, grabbing, drool, insertions by foreign objects:http://members.home.net/odysseysounds/mcgoof.jpg
etc....
its not! i'm looking forward to integrating the technosaurus oscillator, tho..

would be my first choice. (To expand your sonic pallet)For utilityutility would be a good word for it; i bought and built (95%) the paia 9710 env just cuz i needed another env, but the remaining
stuff... sure whynot? (But many of the Serge Modules r far superior in
function....like the 'ins' on Sequencers.
5% (setting it up for bananas, drilling the panel, etc) has been killing me. i'd rather sell the paia and get the pret a porter unit from
modcan ( if bruce will sell to me, that is....)nether am i! well, not high roller, anyway.....and since when have finances been your concern, mr. selector/serge/god knows what
In my situation....going with Modcan (at first) was financial. You can get
into Modcan much cheaper - slowly....im not a hi-roller left coast
attorney.... ;)

problem is: i've only used the TS gear in noisy convention halls and despite lugging the crap around and demo'ing
What do *u* think of the TS? (the sound) Im curious....(b4 I tell u what I
think)
it extensively, i'm not really prepared to offer my take on the sounds (hows THAT for modesty for once!). like i said,
i've got an oscillator on the way, and will be better prepared to give an opinion after working in a more controlled
setting. given all that, i like the TS stuff quite a bit. i've owned the cyclodon and microcon and thought they were
outstanding devices all around.again: what happened? it worked fine at NAMM.

I have been 'home-schooled' over the inter-web ;) from .ch on the black art
of synth repair.
i pretend i'm EF all the time, usually EF in his Malaysian Pale or Stuntman guises. you're talking about Ages, i think....is the

Get a rack at least for the wavetable thing and some modcan filters....it
would make a 'useful' addition. Its fun to sit in the dark and pretend
your Edgar Froese after a long day at the office. (I even put on my velvet
cape and fake mustache)
wavetable reference to PPG? i think stuntman was the first EF solo records with those synths.matt

Doesn't Selector operate at +/- 20 volts? A much higher dynamic range
than other modular systems, so if the VCA uses the full range, even
with slower envelopes you're free to kill your eardrums if thou
wishest
One of you have any news on the (purportedly/ rumouredly) long-
planned Selector modules?

I sort of remember you mentioning something abt getting thee blacet
research "EG1" module on AH a little while ago, matt. Or has my BRANE
gone wrong there?
reason i haven't finished the paia env project is because it uses multiple switching
1/8" jacks; in order for me to convert this unit to bananas, i've got to add actual
switches, *and* another banana jack per 1/8" jack, *and* i've got to expend a modicum of thinkin'
power to get all this done; not worth the time IMO.i'm well aware of your efforts with the blacet modules. good work!
