Serge discography???

Serge discography???

2001-09-03 by John Papiewski

Hi all,

A thread like this went around on AH a long time ago ---
I've been thinking about compiling a discography of Serge related
material for the EGRES site.

Of course there's Michael Stearns, a handful of musicians already on the
EGRES site selling CD's....

Roger Powell had one, and Frank Zappa was rumored to have had one...

Anybody else know of material on CD or LP?

Thanks

John P.

I've been told that Richie Hawtin a.k.a Plastikman has used a Serge
system on his releases for his own Minus label. I've listened to the Minus
01 CD extensively and it sounds like Serge to my ears.

i was arguing with a friend about a mystery modular used by michael beinhorn
on a Rob Zombie session.. it was used in pretty cliche drum and geetar
filtering apparently, such is the fate of modulars when found in the world
of mediocre pop. but, it was white with colored patch points on panels...
sounds like serge.

if thats correct than maybe it got used on alot of beinhorn stuff.. marilyn
manson, hole.. funny, i think this was the only time ive ever heard of a
serge in a professional setting?

i've got a little collection that i will post here for collation on egres, john. a few that
jump to mind are:

barton mclean "mclean mix" (serge on album cover, even!)
kevin braheny - lots of releases featuring "the mighty serge" (which i think was stearns')
thighpaulsandra- "i, thighpaulsandra" new LP (credit to rex and sts on liner notes)
rhythm and noise (rex's old group from san francisco)
tonto, of course

etc. this will be fun!

Since this question was raised, I suppose this isn't blatant self
promotion ;) ... I use my Serge and Fenix heavily on all my releases.

Threshold Records 01 & 02
FullSpectDrum Records 01, 02, 03

Techno and housey stuff with lots of analog processing and synthesis.

Serge Modular System 78 is credited as being used on jazz pianist Stanley Cowell's LP
'Talkin Bout Love' on US Galaxy/Fantasy Records (1978).
I'm a great fan of Stanley Cowell but this album is one of his poorest efforts. The Serge patch
is extremely basic from what I can hear but its interesting that he had one nonetheless. His all electronic
tracks on his earlier album 'Waiting For the Moment' are much better - but no Serge.
Just to confirm, Richie Hawtin had 6 panels last time I spoke with him about gear and stuff.
Most of my own material post 1997 features my 3 panel (soon to be 4) setup. My latest 12" on UK New Religion/EMI
'Nairobi' / 'Nairobi' (Carl Craig Remix) / Unruly is almost all Serge - including the drums/percussion sounds.

What about Mr. Chris Whitten?? I've seen his name on the music credits
for a whole bunch of BBC documentaries, but I wasn't quite sure if he was
using any Serge.

I beleive it's the other way 'round. Kevin gets pretty hot under the collar
over this subject. A good portion of Planetary Unfoldings was his machine and
his programming according to Rex.

Well, this will be jumping the gun so to speak but my .4 panel portable
system can be heard on the new Dweller At The Threshold CD "Ouraborus" on the
Hypnos/Binary lable. Also sometime this winter or next spring i hope to have
my solo project out on the same lable unless the submitted material is just
to far out for them to handle. It will be entirely Serge useing anywhere from
3 to all 22 panels that currently reside in the system.

Yes I've used Serge panels on most projects.
I recently used the resonant eq and frequency shifter extensively on my drum
sample CD.
BTW The SMOG files are a great resource........
Analog Systems have recently released a frequency shifter module for their
Integrator modular system. It is purporting to be an EXACT replica of a Bode
model (see ModCan debate on the merits or not of replicating modules).
Anyway, it's up for review in Sound On Sound magazine and the reviewer
wasn't sure what it should sound like. To cut a long story short, a friend
of a friend contacted me to ask about the Serge Frequency Shifter and I
directed them to the recent debate on SMOG (starting message 121).
I presume the people involved got all the information they needed. There
certainly are quite a few descriptions of how a Freq Shift works and what
kind of effects to expect.
