Well, this is something I haven't heard about before.
What's the deal? Do you have the tapes? Are they in decent shape? Can you
cut a CD from them?

As for the sound files thing, one reason I didn't do it on EGRES was that Rex
requested it that way.
The other is, it's pretty seldom that I've heard something of a promotional
or demonstrative nature in an mp3 that impressed me... the sound quality just
isn't that great, you really can't do much in a couple minutes of a sound
clip, and most of the stuff online has been sweetened with reverb etc.

Having said that, I can also direct you to some of my studio work on mp3.com,
namely http://www.mp3.com/mnml. All the stuff there is pure Serge, with some
digital reverb in the mix.

Cheers

JP

John,

I think what he was refering to was a (proposed) tape (to be)
of SMOG musicians work - If that is not the case, then maybe
it should be (i.e. maybe we should have a SMOG CD or something).
I think you certainly have enough material that you could contribute
a piece. I could certainly round up (or create a new) Serge only
piece.

Any thoughts?

Mike & All

Well, yeah, that idea's been bouncing around for a while... it'd be fun to do
a modern release.
Did I miss it? Is/was there a project to do a SMOG group thing?

If you look at the link on the previous message, it refers to a set of
cassettes that Serge folks did in the early 80's (?).
I would like to see what was done there ... it looks like a variety of
Serge-related stuff done independently & edited together to demonstrate what
Serges could do. I think I saw something in there about a demo tape that
covered the various modules one by one, with narration.

Now THAT would seem extremely useful, informative and open up some "why the
hell didn't *I* think of that?" creative ideas to me....

I'm having a hard time quoting the previous messages
from my work address here, but this is in response to
the last few messages. If you read my notes on the
original Musician's Tapes, I started the project with
just that in mind: let people hear what the different
modules sounded like. That got pretty boring, and
instead, it ended up as a set of music pieces from
professional and amateur musiciansm, varying from
eclectic electronic to lush new-age, with a little bit
of pop and classical in between.

It would be great to hear a Musician's Tape Volume II
from the current crowd of Serge artists!

Ah yes, I should have read it more carefully. I had noticed
that link before and briefly took a look and the PDFs documenting
the tapes.

I think I agree with Rex on the subject of a "module demonstration"
tape/CD/MP3. I guess it might be interesting to have a demo of some
of the more esoteric sound modules (the Wave Multiplier and the
Triple Wave Shaper come to mind) but I think an exhaustive demo of
each module doesn't do anyone any good (I don't believe you can get
an idea of what one of the filters can do by having short sound demos
for example). Plus it might lock people into expecting (or producing)
a specific function from a module and sort of psychologically cut
them off from using different (personal and unique) approaches to
using it.

On the other hand, I do like example patches in books like the
"Gold" book (I would have been pretty lost without the patches
demo-ing the Smooth and Stepped Function Generator in that book).
