The OS is on Eprom but not the Kits...

What we're discussing about was the SDS7 worldly known sickness !!!

  in theory yes, but if the battery has leeked over the PCB, you may have problems
  with burnt or missing tracks (old battery = nasty).

  no idea, I wouldn't have thought so, I would hope that the OS was held on EPROM
  and not in memory.
