SDS9 Batteries and grouchy Frenchman

SDS9 Batteries and grouchy Frenchman

2003-04-29 by sevebc

First of all to young Jeff

Don't let the tetchy rantings of Patrice put you off!
He's simply a crusty cynical frenchman who's a bit pissed
since loosing the Franc to the Euro.

Refer to my posting to Scot no. 167 Well don't bother as I've added
it all below!
"I used a varta PCB battery from Maplin:

2/V150H 2·4 150 345 13.0 417 *(BN23A) (*Maplin's item code)
3/V150H 3·6 150 345 19.2 417 *(BN24B) THIS ONE BEST FOR YOU JEFF
These are both Three tab batteries for solder mouting on the Printed
Circuit Board (PCB)So check yours is the same! I found that all the
brain settings that had faded were instantly recalled once the
battery was securely soldered in place.

So Jeff buy yourself a decent quality soldering Iron (at least 15w),
18 swg solder and desoldering braid, the above battery from Maplin's
(maybe ten dollar - "long time sucky sucky soldier-boy" Full Metal
Jacket/ Cartman SOUTH PARK) and a pair of rubber gloves to keep your
hands unsoiled from the battery nasties.

You will probably need to dismantle the SDS9 case to get easy
access to the battery mouted on the Printed Circuit Board(PCB)
and then you GENTLY desolder the existing
battery tabs with the HOT soldering iron and desolder braid. Not too
hot mind you as you don't want to fry the other components on the
PCB. You may have to tug on the battery whilst you desolder the tabs
and the rubber gloves will help insulate you fingers.

As grouchy Patrice commented you could always pay a repair centre to
replace the battery but then you won't get to see the insides of your
glorious SDS9 unit and it will cost you as much as buying a good
qulity soldering iron and all the bits recommended above. Yow will
also learn a great deal about the unit by just replacing the battery
and maybe spot things that need cleaning on the inside of the unit.

P.S. Patrice and I are friends over email so he can slag
me off directly should he so desire.

Stephen

Thanks for letting me know this and I hope that I can do this. It
does not sound too hard but it may be a little complicated. I will
go to a store and buy this stuff sometimes this week and try to fix
it.

Not to mention you might void your warranty. ;)
