SDS1000 conversion help

SDS1000 conversion help

2006-10-10 by hamsterdrum85

Hi,

I have read a text file about converting an SDS1000 to an SDS1000M. I
did not understand some parts of the text, can anyone help me? can
anyone show me some pictures of the SDS1000 circuit board to show me
how certain things are positioned? I am very curious about what it
looks like inside because I tried to take mine apart. I cannot take it
apart due to a split screw and I am looking forward to attempting to
carefully destroy the screw without damaging the important stuff.

I do have a bunch of resistors and a few capacitors in my disposal. I
can get required resistors, capacitors, and diodes I don't have at
Radio Shack, where I got my parts from. The only parts I cannot find are:

the two 8-pin cassette jacks
the three needed chips
the schottky diode

Does anyone know where to get any of these parts? I am having trouble
with knowing things, like what an 8M2 resistor is. All I can
understand is the 8M means 8 megaohms, but I don't know what the 2
means. Can anyone tell me?

For when I get done upgrading my console, can anyone tell me what midi
notes are used to trigger the SDS1000 sounds?

I hope I will know soon.

Thank You

Dean Rumsey

8M2 is Euro notation where the magnitude replaces the decimal. Hence
8M2 = 8.2Mohms, 2k2 = 2.2 kohm, etc.

The "cassette jacks" are right angle circular DIN MIDI connectors,
something like Digi-Key 275-1022-ND. Not sure why they called out 8
pins, but hey. You may or may not have trouble getting it to fit on the
PCB land pattern and rear holes. You could always consider using a
panel-mount version instead and flying lead to the board.

You should be able to find subs for any of your parts at an online
retailer such as Digi-Key or Mouser.

I am assuming the SDS1000 is the same circuit boards without these parts
stuffed. Where they go should be fairly self-evident once you get the
box open. They are clustered around the holes on the back panel where
the jacks go.

I do not remember the midi notes offhand, but I do know that they do not
line up with the typical general midi assignments on my akai MPC.

I haven't checked the schematics etc, but if you're in the US (or Europe for
that matter) mouser.com have tonnes of stuff...

I did one of these many years ago. The non midi verion is the same board
with parts not fitted, although it's possible there were different board
revisions.

The midi in and out drivers are near the holes in the back, but there
were extra components around the individual drum voices elsewhere on
the board.

I have all the documentation and a broken scanner - if you're in the UK
(or maybe Europe) I might consider posting the stuff to you, otherwise
it'll have to wait 'till I get a new scanner (soon hopefully).
