To be honest - I haven't got the faintest. AFAIK the surface below the rubber or composite is wood, but what kind of composite material it is I do not know... Approaching Warp 9 with an unstable pad would be dangerous - possibly sending threatening subspace transmissions to the module, and is not recommended. Adjusting the surface tension of the striking surface as would be done with a conventional drum is also not recommended either, as acoustic drums do not fare well in most parts of the galaxy. A great deal of the beings encountered while traveling are as fond of the SDS7 pads as the SDS5's, something to do with that whole three pin connection thing. They seem to like the warp drive in the SDS5 module better... Most of them are happy just that you've shared with them.
