Rebuilding SDX power supply

Rebuilding SDX power supply

2014-02-17 by <edrose1@...>

Hey all.
I understand that the PSU on the SDX is a common problem. Have any of you had any luck rebuilding them or is it better to just buy a new one? I know it'd be easier to just drop in a new one but I'm hoping it's a simple enough design that replacing capacitors/anything else flaky would be much cheaper. Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Ed

Hi Ed - really depends what the fault is. The + and - 15V are quite simple regulator circuits, but the 12V and 5V supplies are quite complicated.
There's a few of the capacitors that are prone to popping and letting out a lot of smoke, but the PSU's can still run without them.
Can you give us a bit more information about what's not working ?
Phil.

I don't have it yet, Phil. Just trying to get things in order for its arrival.
The seller was testing it (since it'd been in hibernation for over a decade) and after 10 minutes of operation smelled something funny and immediately powered it down. He suspected a PSU fault as he'd had them before and had been warned about them in the past. He is by no means a tech so it may be something totally different. I'll let you know more once it arrives.
