PSIM + Fat Controller = Dynamic Duo

2005-08-19 by Andrew Scheidler

Fellow PSimians -

Ever since I played with Mark Morton's System 700 sequencer, I've been
looking for ways to get the "quantized step length" feature. Here's
what I've gotten so far:

http://www.ph.k12.in.us/~drew/noise/psim/fc700a.mp3
http://www.ph.k12.in.us/~drew/noise/psim/fc700b.mp3

The 8 step sequence is being played by a Fat Controller. Channel A is
for notes, Channel B determines one of three step lengths (1/16, 1/8 or
1/4). In the first mp3, I start with all 1/4 notes and gradually move
the various steps to 1/16 notes. The second mp3 is the other way
around.

Since the Fat Controller doesn't have a "Clock In", I made a DIN Sync
breakout cable (yes I actually managed to solder!) so the PSIM can feed
pulses (6 per step) to the Fat Controller. I used a Binary Zone to feed
the PSIM Clock pulses, and the PSIM looks at the Fat Controller's
Channel B CV to determine the appropriate number of pulses to feed the
Fat Controller's clock (via the DIN sync).

(The synth is a Blacet VCO thru my supercool Frostwave/Great Lakes
Modular MS-20 filter)

I'm still making some improvements. I'll post the program when it's
cleaned up a bit more.

Andrew
