PSIM recieved, so I uploaded some mp3's and code

2004-05-05 by Mike Marsh

Yeah, Baby!

Those of you that already have 'em know that the build quality is
top notch. Beautiful peice of work, indeed!

I uploaded an MP3 that I created using Dr. Mabuse's badpotsim
(something about R2D2). Crazy good stuff. The other MP3 is the
result of a little code I wrote to generate random notes (between 48
and 72 MIDI note values) with arpeggiation.

The idea behind the code was to get my feet wet with the IDE,
compiler, etc. Well, I got soaked, but the code is done. I used
Brice's table sequencer as the basis for the program and just
inserted my CALCNOTE routine and the arpeggiation code. Later
tonight, I'll put up a program that has a blank CALCNOTE routine
with TEMPO derived from CV1. You could use this to come up with
your own algorithm for generating notes. I know I have a few ideas
for CALCNOTE! (Can you say 'fractal'?)

Any-who, much fun, although the IDE did overwrite my first attempt
with a nice blank file :(

Bad IDE, no biscuit.

Mike

Oh, yeah! :-) Mine is threatening to leave me if I don't write some
code for it soon, but that's another story.

I'm not sure if it applies to your case, but make *sure* to read
message #96 from Dr. Mabuse. It would belong in the FAQ, if there
were a FAQ for this group.

*** ALL PSIM-1 OWNERS SHOULD READ MESSAGE 96 ***

Cheers!

I have the beginning of the FAQ on the SynthModules Web site. So far... it
contains Doc's message 96. More to be added soon...

Also, if you are uploading files/photos, etc., please make sure they are
placed into the correct folders and are relevant to the group. If you have
questions regarding whether or not something can/should be uploaded...
please ask.

Thanks,
- Brice

I read the group title, but failed to fully read the group
description. Thinking it was about synth modules (plural), I quickly
realized it was all about "one" module. A very complex one still in
the developement stage at that! So, I'm hopping out and hope to find
a group that deals with other modules. I belong to
modularsynthdotcom, but cannot seem to wake them up over there.
Perhaps they need an analog alarm clock too?
Take care and keep on tweakin' those knobs...
Sincerely,
-Dave Randalls

Dave,
This group is about Brice Hornback's products made under the
Synthmodules.com name. The only current module is the PSIM-1, which has
already reached the production stage. Several PSIM-1s are now "in the wild,"
and their owners (including me) are crazy about them.

There are 2 mailing lists you may want to check out:

For analog synthesis -- not just modulars -- a popular group is Analogue
Heaven (AH). To subscribe, go here:
http://machines.hyperreal.org/Analogue-Heaven/

If you are into synth DIY (do it yourself) projects, the Synth-DIY list has
less traffic than AH and has a higher signal:noise ratio. Subscribe here:
http://www.euronet.nl/~rja/Emusic/Synth-diy/

Also, there is The Gas Station (GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome ;-). Things
are much quieter there. It's a discussion board, not a mailing list. You
must join (free) to post:
http://www.the-gas-station.com
There are various "pumps," including a Modular Synthesis pump. I suppose the
analogy (no pun int'd!) was that you go the the Gas Station and hang out
near one of the pumps to chat with like-minded folks. Whatever.

Finally, there are groups for specific brands of modular synth, such as a
Yahoo Group for Synthesizers.com gear -- although people digress into
discussions of other synths, since few folks have just one brand of gear.

Have fun!
