Display update

Display update

2005-06-28 by djbrow54

After playing with the VFD display on my PSIM I decided I did need a
display on my synth. Mounting it as a module is impractical since it
takes width and you really need to be able to see it so I mounted it
in a small portable enclosure. I power it with +5 volts and can
drive it with MIDI or 38,400 serial (e.g. AUX output using serout
command).

Not sure how practical it is but I thought the programming would be
fun. Now I can display various messages and speech under voltage
control!

Based on a conversation with Brice, I started experimenting with the
s_out pin. Adding a 4k7 resistor between pins 2 and 5 of a 9 pin
D-sub connector provides another output that I now use to drive my
lcd display module. The RS-232 driver on the AtomPro 'steals' -12V
from serial-in for the negative reference for serial-out. Since
I'm not using serial-in there is no ground reference. The 4k7
resistor provides an adequate pull down to provide a reasonably fast
serial signal. I use 38400 baud to drive the display (I may
experiment with increasing this to 57600 baud). Now I can use all
my PSIM outputs and drive the lcd display from the programming port.
I just had to make a 9 pin D-sub to 1/4" cable and add the resistor
in the connector shell.
