Mark,
You only *have* to program it once... or ask that a specific program be
loaded in before I ship it. No, the cable does not have to be plugged into
a computer all the time; only for programming. I have several people who
have purchased more than one, programmed with a specific program, and leave
it that way. Want the best quantizer available? How about the best S&H
module on the planet? There is no question that the PSIM-1 excels at these
functions. What makes the PSIM-1 so special is that although it *can* be
used as a single use module (and does things no other module in the world
can do) is that it *can* be re-programmed. So, it's like having a module
that performs the functions of hundreds (actually, it is only limited by how
many programs we all write for the thing) of modules. Keep in mind the
PSIM-1 (although it does have a small computer (Hitachi H8 3664) built
in.... it is an analog module. Four analog inputs and four analog outputs.
Some may say the hybrid design isn't a true analog module... but then how
many of you are still recording on audio tape and not burning CDs? Okay...
yes, I do have a four track recorder. Anyone want to buy a cassette TAPE of
the PSIM-1 samples? ;)
By the way, I just found a very simple way to plug in a computer mouse to
the PSIM-1 that allows for controlling X & Y axis (plus the buttons and
scroll wheel if you like) to use as an input device. That would make sort
of the *ultimate joystick controller*... and yes, you can use an optical
mouse for even higher resolution than a ball mouse! :) More details on
this later. It will be a DIY project as I have no time right now to develop
the interface. It requires one PIC (pre-programmed), resonator, a couple
caps & resistors, power supply (9V battery is fine), and a few wires. Just
plug it into the AUX jack on the PSIM-1 and you're good to go. More
functionality (buttons, scroll wheel, etc.) would require plugging it into
the DB9 serial port once you've programmed the PSIM-1 as commands have to be
sent to the mouse. But, you can get X-Y coordinates using one wire from the
mouse. More on this later if anyone is interested.
Gotta run...
