Seems your Akai cannot see the media because it´s formatted 1024 sectors, which starts w/ all MOD media 640MB and larger.
The drive itself has to be compatible w/ the AKAI S-1xxx series too.
Fujitsu MCB 3064SS works w/ Verbatim Optical 230MB here.
Try to find drive and media 1st, then test.
If it doesn´t work, your IB-103 might be faulty, but I think it isn´t´cuase the harddrive works.
You cannot change sector formatting w/ MO media by re-formatting w/ the Akai sampler.
Akai S-1xxx series formatting is a soft-formatting or "arrange" formatting,- just only printing the Akai directory format on the media.
All this is not an assumption,- I own S-1000, S-1000 PB and S-1100,- all fitted w/ IB-103 and I have 2 Fujitsu MOD drives as well as Syndrives from Synthax, Lacom and Hybrid Arts.
All works well.

Hi! Dear friends:
I have a problem with an AKAI S1100 sampler and do not know the cause. Well, I think the problem is in the SCSI system but not sure.
I tried first with an MO drive, set to ID 5 and S1100 in ID 6. When I inserted the disc it starts to turn but soon stops and the sampler does not detected it "Disk drive not ready ..." MO drive is apparently in good condition and with the terminator position.
Later I tried connecting to the internal SCSI connection IB 103 a HD installed in a ITX pc case with power supply. Surprise! The HD works if I just plug the power wire , if I connect the SCSI ribbon cable does not turn, and of course is not detected by the sampler "waiting for hard disk ..."
The HD has the ID properly configured and the terminator position.
I read on this web http://akaiscsifaq.digidude.net/ about terminator fuse, I checked the fuse and is in good condition. However I'll try to change it to see the results.
I'm starting to get a little desperate.
Thanks and sorry for used a google traslator, I'm from Spain
