Formating a 100MB Zip Disk

Formating a 100MB Zip Disk

2012-02-22 by swede950

What is the best way to format a 100MB zip disk with a S1100 to utilize the whole disk? Meaning when I am in the format page for hard-: what should I type in under
HARD PARTIONS
Size:
Max:

Default is "size:60 and max:1"

Logic tells me "size:50 and max:2"

Am I right or wrong?

Thanks

I found that it depends what you're going to do with the disk later.
Also how much RAM is in the sampler, I assume 32MB for the following discussion..

If all you need is to collect the libraries into useful blocks, then
size:32
max:3

This uses all the disk, and allows you to load a whole partition to have a listen to what's in it. Init?
A 50 MB partition doesn't leave 50MB remainder either, so 2 x 48 is what I tried, but it's hard to audition the entire content

For use in an MPC 3000 a smaller partition is required, and other members might have more details on this.

The S1000 is also a useful format for other samplers to read and the 32Mb limit means the Roland S760 won't have a heart attack looking at the disk.
Also The K2000, 2500 will read it, and so will e-mu of EIII upwards, though an EIII with 32Mb is rare.

You should always label the zip as to the format type and partition size, it's very confusing later if you don't.

Personally I recommend a top line label of where this disk content originates ( for example S1000 CD Vol1 Part A)
and a second line which indicates its current format and the disk number ( for example S1000_nn, where nn is the actual disk number, I use the first digit for category).
If you're translating between formats and reading and saving to different zips, that's essential, a careless write can trash your disk ( S3000 zip written to in an S5000)

All of this fits above the sticky label area, leaving room to note the actual program names, and changes won't destroy your indexing.

A Black Sharpie is ideal for this bit, I can read it at 10 paces even if I can't find my glasses.

I normally write the partition information on the sticky label when the zip is formatted, before I put any data on it, it's amazing how often you need a formatted disk in a hurry and need to know how much space it has.

Les the Librarian.
Why without your glasses your quite..........old and wrinkled

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
