Distortion

2014-06-13 by jsewellro@...

Hey guys, I am trying to fix my akai s1100. The main problem is that i am getting an ugly almost bit crush like distortion on all of my audio, including test tone, and sine wave samples that are built in, any ideas as to what it might be?

thanks

Jonathan

I'd start with cleaning and if necessary replacing and potentiometers. I
have yet to open mine up. I have zip drove I'd like to put inplace of of
the 3.5' floppy drive.

No.
Id start w/ the hardware test routines as described in the service manual.
Its here ...

Hardware test routines are chapter 3-3 IIRC.

When you have distortion it can be everything like the converters, the clock, any analog output components like OP amps or smaller parts like resistors and caps failure...

When the unit passes the hardware test routines without any failure,- then you have a case for a service center I fear.

You get dropouts and scratching from worn out pots but no continuous distortion.

Hey PeWe, thanks for the help, I have been running the diagnostics and i found that it did not pass the CPU memory test, would you be able to tell my this is happening?

thanks

Jonathan

How should I ?
Im not a service technician,- only have some skills and experience w/ MY gear :-)

If it doesnt pass the CPU memory test, the service manual says "check memory circuit and LSI".

You cannot repair that yourself,- on the DSP (CPU) board there is dedicated RAM which has nothing to do w/ the waveform-memory cards.
This RAM is IC 2 on the DSP board in the schematics and there can be many of these in the ballpark..
The DSP is a LSI chip I think.
It can be everything thinkable damaged on that circuit board, not only one of these chips ...
You need an oscilloscope and tone generator to find the fault and later youll run into the "finding parts and solder em in and out nitemare".

Its much easier and cheaper buying a 2nd working condition S-1100 and make one out of two, then using the rest of the canibalized sampler for spare parts in future.
I myself also own a somewhat dead S-1100 and was not able to find the fault, neither the authorized AKAI service could.

I wished you had a damaged waveform memory board which causes distortion (some also do when running hot !),- that would be a easy fix then.

Yes, it is because you have a worst case failure,.- something w/ DSP and RAM on DSP circuit board.
When you only had a waveform memory failure,- that would be easy fix by swapping a memory bord or leave it out in case you have several installed.

When you had distortion at specific outputs only,- it would be a (Burr Brown) DAC on one of the S-1100s converter boards.

But in your case, the distortion appears in the digital domain already and in the environment of processor and its RAM,- so its present everywhere in analog and digital outputs.

The easiest fix is finding a working condition DSP (digital main-) board and swap the boards.

Also, when i run the test tone, it is distorted through all of the outputs.

interestingly, I have distortion also... but only on a couple of keys : /
consistently, with the test program.
