Well it seems to be booting up because after fiddling with the power
wires I turned it back on and this time the LCD display was grey and
slowly started to create vertical dark colored lines until the whole
screen was full but I still cannot read anything.

New LCD all together or just the backlight?

sounds like the whole LCD is bad. if the backlight is bad you can
stiill read the LCD under a good light.

it *could* be something much worse though.

if I remember correctly, the s1000 boots up with test wave forms in
memory. you should be able to get it to make some noise by letting it
boot up, then pressing the sample key then the play key.(I'm not at
home so I can't be sure I'm remembering correctly)

or alternativly use the test menu as described in the service manual.

I'd. try to get some sound out of it before buying a new LCD.

ewan.

I stick a disk in and hit disk then format and no lights turned on.
Sounds like a power supply issue eh? I hope it isn't more serious. My
multimeter is broken too damnit so I cannot pindown how far passed the
P/S any current is going.

Yes I have had test sine waves come out of it before. Is there a not
Akai brand LCD I can purchase similar to the backlight that just sorta
fits enough and is super cheap? But I think my LCD is fine considering
what I said in my last email.

if it's booting up then it should try to read the disk even if your
floppy drive is broken. that's a fairly good indicator of how well
your s1000 is doing, since loading the OS from floppy is the last
thing the Rom OS does.

I'm pretty sure the s1000 LCD is a standard type, not an impossible to
find custom lcd like the mpc2000, I can't remember the model though,
it's likely marked on the LCD itself or you might find more info in
the service manual.

I have to replace my backlight, so I'll. be trying to find a cheap
replacement. I'll. post anything interesting to the list.

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] update

2015-01-04 by Ewan Colsell

if your floppy drive light dosent come on and you can't get test tones
in service mode. then that's a pretty good indicator that you have
*other* problems. not necescarily *bigger* problems.

get your hands on a multimeter and check the power supply. a bad power
supply can cause all sorts of weird behaviour , rule this out first.
look for visual evidence of failed components. power supplies often
fail. you don't need an exact replacement either. you just need to
find a power supply with the right voltage and power charecteristics,
that fits into the case.

if you have more than one ram card try swapping them around, booting
with only one card (in the first slot)

you might be able to boot without a ram card, but I haven't tried
this. (the OS has its own memory)

if it's not your psu or your ram then you do indeed have *bigger* problems.

if worst comes to worst, then you can always find another one, they
are still pretty cheap. or if you give up completely you can sell me
your ram cards!

ewan.

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] update

2015-01-07 by Merence Tckenna

Well it ued to power on and produce t4est tones I could jsut never
format a disk or upate the OS. This new issue of it not havin gany power
going to the main board makes me think its the power supply. I am in
contact with another user who has 2 S1100s for parts but shipping from
japan is gonna cost me mucho us greenback. Maybe its just a bad
capacitor (fingers crossed) my multimeter recently died on me so I need
to source another one to track down the problem.
