I think it's been mentioned before, but the easiest thing to do is to just wedge the LEDs in the pcb holes without actually soldering them. That means that when you switch on, they will still work and you can see what's going on. (and see the fancy bootup lightshow :- >) Also, if you're using an lcd display, don't panic if you can't see anything at first. Adjust the contrast and the display should come good.
