I do something kind of similar with the Korg ER-1. I set it to a 
blank patch/pattern which gets in sync and then send a patch change 
when I want it to start. It works quite well.

Can there be a way to control this via a midi message? I've not used 
the P3 in conjunction with my PC yet, so I don't know how those 
features work.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
