Good question - I'd say the length of the pattern personally. And if
the length is altered by Skip this makes the pattern shorter and thus
alters the length.

It is still nice to be able to quickly set the length as, personally,
I use skip as a performance trick, not in actually creating sequences.
But others may do it differently, in fact it's pretty much inevitable
