have you tried using your nose? :-)

my p3 was full of nonsense after I upgraded the memory; I can't
remember  what it was like after going to v4, but I went back & forth
a couple of times between v3 & v4 (indecision being a past-time of
mine) without too much trouble.

the power-on memory clearing operation should sort it out, but you
will have to use either a piece of camera tape to hold the step key
down, or use y'r nose (which is what I do..)
