chaps- thought I'd share this. I needed to make a bit more space in my rack case & so I started looking at ways to shrink the p3 to a 3U case. I dropped a line to a list member here who has a photo of his p3 in the photo section; he's made his 3U & it matches his doepfer rack gear. well, when he didn't answer, I got out the chainsaw anyway. actually, I got out the tape measure & dusted off FPD, & loaded colin's original 4U FPD design. it was surprisingly easy to shrink it all down, & the new panel is super-smart. schaefer are also making the back & sides as I write this, but the sequencer is already mounted to the new front. couple of observations- no great difficulties, especially if you built your p3 from a kit in the first place. the tempo & data pots will fit at the right side of the function keyboard instead of underneath, if you move everything about 5mm to the left. the pots & buttons can be mush closer together, but the one thing that caught me out was an IDC connector on the button board; I have bought a replacement that will allow the cable to be at 90 degrees to the board instead. otherwise the button board (& LEDs) will be slightly recessed. it looks nice like that... the mode buttons board is too long for a 3U panel but there's nothing important at the ends, so it can be carefully trimmed to fit. I have mounted the main board on pillars at the back of the pots boards, with the component side inwards, so only the midi sockets & power switch/socket are still to be mounted. I need the back for that. :-) new knobs are a bit fatter than I'd like; waiting for some in the same design but narrower. then I'll post pics. duncan.
