AC would be OK - the diode will act as a half-wave rectifier.
I think the -9v DC Fred's seeing is what should be the 0v line - he'll have
the +9v line connected to the 0v input, so the +ve input will be 9 volts
below.

my PSU *does* output DC. i thought center positive was what was required,
but i guess i was wrong. anyway, i rewired the power jack and woo hoo it
lights up!!!!

however, i'm unable to initialize the memory so it just sists there
freaking out. the reason i can't do this is because the whole first column
of keys on the function keypad is not working... i probably crunched some
diodes (damn diodes again! :) when i was snipping out the tact switches to
replace them with maplin switches. more ordering from mouser... hooray! :)

the other issue is that the step key LEDs do not light up at all... at one
point, i did manage to get the P3 to do something, and pressing the switch
did acutally switch modes... the step key LEDs were changing in an
expected fashion. would problems on the keypad or with a lack of
initialization cause this?

bleep.
out.
