thing that can turn sys-ex into *.mid, is it freely/easily available? I will
need to do the machine that's in stockport using my crappy datafiler....

You'll find it in the group files section at Yahoo.
It's a command line utility.

usage: syx2midi [-ms #] [-verbose] filename.syx filename.mid
-ms # pause between sysex transfer in milliseconds (default: 20)
-verbose	show beginning of sysex commands (hexadecimal)

For a P3 dump, use something like:

syx2midi -ms 150 p3fw.syx p3fw.mid

Note the restriction to 8.3 filenames.
Works fine for me.
