MIDI-sync, DIN-sync,...

2005-08-26 by jitterbugbite2003

Hi,

Just as I'm getting ready to order some parts and actually begin
building the P3, I was confused about the sync options. What if I'm
not interested in DIN-sync, but want to have both Midi-note output and
MIDI-clock on the outputs. What parts should I omit and/or add ? i
couldn't quite grasp that from the DIY-pages...sorry

So Sync settings can't be configured on MIDI-outputs separately. I
mean, Note and clock output on OUT 1 and 2 and MIDI-clock output only
on 3 and 4 ? You make a setting in the beginning and there's no
switching afterwards ?
should I get that extra programmed IC for having MIDI clock sent out
of the outputs ?

The four MIDI outs are essentially a built-in MIDI thru box - they all carry
the same signal.
There is an option to select whether or not MIDI clock is transmitted from
the normal MIDI outs.
You can change that option whenever you like.

The SYNC output is quite separate from the normal MIDI outs.
DIN sync is always transmitted by the CPU, and would usually be carried to
the SYNC output.
What the extra PIC allows you to do is to convert the DIN sync output to
MIDI clock, rewiring the SYNC output to carry this independent, clock-only
MIDI output instead of the DIN sync signals.
You have to fit the PIC, and wire the SYNC output socket for MIDI clock
instead of DIN sync when you builf your P3, and would have to re-wire it to
change over at a later time.
In fact, you can actually wire the SYNC socket for *both* MIDI clock and DIN
sync at the same time - but you need to use a special cable so your attached
DIN sync devices don't confuse the MIDI data with a DIN CONTINUE pulse.

Note that the P3 DIN sync output does not carry the CONTINUE signal - there
weren't enough CPU pins left for it, and a lot of DIN-equipped gear doesn't
support it anyway.
