P3 and Sysex problems, an update

P3 and Sysex problems, an update

2003-10-04 by Andy Wilson

Hi Guys,

I'm a happy bunny today :->)

Believe it or don't. The solution to my sysex woes, i.e. not being able
to reflash my P3 was all down to the opto -isolator on the midi input
of the P3 board.

I had the specified 6N139 device originally, and even though I could
pass midi data quite happily using mthru on the P3, it was giving me
problems with loading large blocks of data.

On a hunch, I thought I'd replace the opto, with a pin compatible
device, HCPL-4701, which has a higher current transfer ratio (600%
compared to 400%).

B*gger me, it worked first time. Just to check, I popped the 6N139
back in, and it was still not playing the game, so I took it out,
dropped it on the floor and squashed it.

So problem solved, I'm now running with V3.79. Thanks for the
advice that Colin and Paul offered, especially thanks to Colin for
inspecting my dump.....

(Call me Juvenile, but......:->)

Now to get that case back from Steve Thomas.

Cheers all

Andy

That's really bizarre. I've never had a problem with the 6N139, so I
guess there may have been some damage to the one you were using (static
?).
It'd be interesting if you get a chance to try another 139 and see if it
works OK.
Why the part would work OK for bursts of data like note messages and
short sysex blocks, but stop working during a large continuous block I
can only guess - maybe some stray capacitance at work...

Anyway, glad to hear you got it fixed !

Cheers,
Colin f

Dropped in another 139 this morning, and it works fine! Must have
just had a duff specimen.

So, as you were everybody. Still if anyone else has similar problems,
at least they'll know where to start looking.

Even though mine is still lashed up on the workbench, I'm having
great fun with it. Realy cool piece of kit, Colin - Thanks

BTW, I've stuck some preliminary photos of my P3 here

Hi Andy

Looks very cool, a little minimalist maybe, but still cool :)

So, what housing you going to use?

I really wish I had the time to build a P3 but don't get enough time to write music, let alone build cool sequencers..

oh well,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Probably not 'gig ready' ;->)

See Paul Maddox's enclosure here. It uses a case with walnut end
cheeks, from Hammond. CNC engraving by Steve Thomas.

The most time consuming bit is probably finding and ordering the
components. Construction doesn't really take that long. I think Mr
Maddox did it in an evening!!

All the best

kewl cases those.

three evenings :-)
Evening 1) assemble PCBs
Evening 2) Adjust the case to make all the holes fit properly (Dont panic, I
emailed steve the corrections)
Evening 3) Mount it all inside the case and play.

A grand total of around 12 hours, no more..

I'm looking forward to seeing if it all fits. I'll post some more photos
when it's done.

Now I've seen those PLED displays.....hmmmm I want one.

Cheers
