thx to both Colin and Jerome for this tip - that does the trick!

Early units were hard-wired for either MIDI clock or DIN sync, but
not both.

Sounds like your unit is wired for MIDI clock.------

actually, i was told that this was one of the last (maybe even THE
last) production units --- you sold it directly to Larry in Toronto?

does that mean this should sending out both Midi & DIN ?

thx, jason

It can send MIDI and DIN, and should by default.
Now that I re-read your original mail, I remembered that the 808 has a
non-standard use of pin 4 in the DIN sync input.
You'll need to use a sync lead without pin 4 connected.
The easiest way to do that is to get a lead, and carefully break off pin 4
with some pliers.
DIN plugs have strange pin numbers.
I hope Yahoo doesn't strip the spaces out of this ascii...
These are the pin numbers looking INTO a DIN PLUG.

             2
        5 O 4
        O O

     3 O O 1

DIN sync uses pins 1, 2 and 3.
Pin 2 is ground.

MIDI uses pins 4, 2 and 5, again pin 2 is ground.
So normally, there would be no problem with DIN sync appearing on pins 1 and
3, MIDI on 4 and 5, and ground on pin 2.
For the 808, pin 4 must be disconnected, as it is a 'reset' input.
