Hi ..is this a genuine backlit lcd or one of the newer oled/pled
versions? If its a regular backlit lcd sounds like the contrast
control voltage may be intermittant or the lcd is genuinely on its way
out. The contrast control coltage is just a taken from the +5V supply
and is controlled by a small cermet trimpot on the main pcb. I would
imagine this would either work or not but could be a flakey cermet.
The fact that it brightens after 5-10mins could mean the lcd is on
its way out or even the 5v supply is perhaps varying over time?
It wouldnt be too difficult to fix either way. I dont know much at all
about how contrast is controlled on oled/pled displays.

cheers
steve

Hi ..OLED/PLED displays have a black background and lighter characters
(like the one shown on the homepage of this site). Backlit LCD screens
have bright background (yellow, green or blue usually). Sounds like
yours is OLED/PLED. I have heard these
have reliability issues? Anyway its easy enough to replace with a
backlit lcd if you are worried..the mainboard supports both kinds of
display. A tech could easily do it for you.

cheers
steve

LCD going darker...help!!!

2008-04-17 by david

Hi!
I think my LCD has some problems.
It's going everyday darker:
when i turn it on i can't see all the characters,
and only after 5-10 minutes it becomes a little brighter.
What could it be?
It's an hardware problem or do you suggest to reinstall the software?
Thanks for any help...i'm really worried because I can't live without my
P3!!!

Hi, thanks for the reply.
My P3 is a ready built unit, with serial 1008
and I don't know what kind of LCD has it.
It's darker in the lower part,
like there's a sort of shadow.
I can still work with it,
but i'm worried that it could be turn off definitely one day.

The PLED displays do wear out over time, though the 'half-life' was supposed
to be 10,000 hours.
In practice it seems to be less than that.
If your display is fading, it doesn't mean that it is going to fail
completely.
The worst affected displays are obviously those that have been on longest.
The V4 OS for P3 includes a screensaver that will extend the life of your
display by blanking it after 10 minutes of inactivity.

The PLED can be replaced with an LCD display, and I have kits with a
suitable module, mounting screws, etc.
I'm going to put an order page for these up just as soon as I've got my head
round a new web editing package.

Thanks Colin for the reply.
I've seen the screensaver function in the last beta,
but maybe it was too late: indeed seems i have left my P3 turned on for too
many hours,
i really didn't know that, otherwise i'd payed more attention.
Btw i'll order a new LCD as soon as you make the order page.
Thanks again.
