Problem with Sysex dump

Problem with Sysex dump

2009-01-05 by Jim Combs

Wonder if anyone has seen similar issue and may have a suggestion:

Intel Mac Pro, Sysex Librarian, MOTU MTP AV (USB) with latest drivers,
P3 with v4 with memory upgraded.

I'm having a hard time getting a consistent dump of the same set of
banks from the P3 into Sysex Librarian.

It appears the P3 is not shooting out sysex at a constant rate or the
MIDI stream is corrupt.

I've got about 12 full banks of 8 tracks and my message count ranges
from 154 to 981 for different dumps and from 3.4 to 15.4 KB message size.

Will do a triple check later, but my cables, MIDI interface, and
drivers appear ok. I can do a consistent dump with my JD-800 via the
exact same setup.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Hmm. My setup is pretty similar (Sysex Librarian 1.1, MOTU 828II, v4
P3 with memex) and am having no problems with transfers.

Sysex Librarian lets you examine the dump: there are packets of
various sizes, but they all have "P3" in ASCII somewhere near the
start (in fact, "P30", "P31" up to "P34") and they all have the F7 at
the end. The sysex from the P3 will not seem constant because the
packets vary quite widely in size (biggest seems to be 178 bytes).

My suspicion is that you have some kind of USB MIDI brokage going on
(my 828II is FireWire).

I've had this with a Motu Micro Express and an Opcode 8port/se.It's
not just P3 sysex data they don't like either.
I solved the problem by using the MIDI port on my RME soundcard. I
also had no problems with an Edirol UM-3EX.

Your suspicions were correct. I swapped out my MOTU MTP AV with an old
Midiman 1X1 and everything works correctly. Have successfully dumped 3
times with the same results. Will figure out what's wrong the the MOTU
chain later.

Now to replace a broken potentiometer!
