4U > 3U refurb number 2

4U > 3U refurb number 2

2010-05-03 by duncan

photos section now has pics of my original (RGB) P3 in its new case. this was my second conversion from the original 4U to 3U (with a view to reducing the size of the rack-mount part of the set-up).

this time I went for a complete case (schaeffer); the other unit with the red aluminium front lives in a flight-case & so just has a protective sleeve. got the measurements right first go! :-)

the red perspex is rather pretty, but picks up the dust very quickly. I added a couple of LEDs internally in an attempt to back-light the labelling. on reflection, I should have had white or yellow lettering.
I might retrofit some adhesive silver panels behind the legending here to make it more legible.

the knobs are from an ebay seller, & look very sequential circuits.

this will definitely be the stay-at-home-&-not-get-scratched unit.

if anyone else is planning a 3U case, drop me a line. I have the schaeffer files from this one, & there are a couple of gotchas, mainly to do with IDC connector positioning & the mode switch board.

>>I'll stick it in the files section tomorrow- it's on my PC at work.<<

bear with me.... I need to find the files first (work PC is a disaster) & then augment them with a little document explaining how to make it all fit together.

the big gotchas are the menu switch board (the long narrow one with two buttons & eight LEDs) & the IDC connectors on the pot board & switch board.....

since I've never seen a kit-form P3, I don't know how much of the board assembly is completed, but in my two factory machines, the lower pot board & the step-switch had angled IDC connectors, while the upper pot board had a straight IDC connector. I had to exchange this with the one from the step-switch board so that the connectors would all fit with the boards mounted closer together. so.... the step-switch board has a straight-up IDC connector & the two pot boards both have an angled connector.
the menu switch board had to be trimmed to fit behind the 3U panel, & I had to make new mounting holes. this is an easy if somewhat delicate operation, & probably quite easy to mess up!

anyway. pictures & files to follow.

files & notes are there now. let me know if you get stuck...

I have disposed of one of my 4U cases already- it went to another list-member with bits of p3 waiting for a case. I have another 4U panel (which has "radio massacre international" engraved on it... ) but the other case is kissing its sides & is very tatty, it has been in my live-rig for several years. you can have the panel if you promise t=not to gig with it.... :-)

yeah, that was supposed to say "missing". not like me to commit a typo... :-)

no, that case really is shot. only the front is any good, & it's got "radio massacre international" engraved on it. you can see it in the photos section.
