4.5 notes?

4.5 notes?

2010-05-04 by Nick Rothwell

Firing up the Quattro - erm, P3 - for a new project. I notice from the Sequentix site that there's now a 4.5 OS release, which I'll punt into my unit, but the 4.5 usage notes link is the same as that for 4.0. Is there actually a new 4.5 document?

Never mind, found it: the link on the download page is right, it's just the link on the main page that's wrong.

Doh.
Fixed now.

No problem. A (probably obvious) question re: 4.5: I don't get an option for saving a changed pattern: if I come out of edit and back into play the pattern is saved automatically. Is this right?

(My head is still in 3.x space and I've not touched the P3 in over a year so I'm only slowly getting back into things.)

Another question: is there a sysex document for 4.5 sufficiently detailed to hack together a librarian for it?

Have you got the user conf option for "auto save edits" turned on, by any
chance ?

It uses the same sysex format as v4.0
The data structures are the same, but the interpretation of the data is
different.
In v4.0, there are 64 possible pattern slots, in as much as there could be a
pattern for each track in each part.
Each of these pattern slots 'belongs' to the part/track number where it is
created.
A ghost pattern is where a pattern is assigned to a part/track number other
than the one where it was created.

In v4.5, the ownership link between part/track locations and patterns is
removed.
Each track in each part points to a pattern number.
There are 64 pattern slots.
There is no concept of 'ghost' patterns any longer, simply patterns that are
assigned in more than one part/track location.
It may make more sense once you use it a little.

You can load a v4.0 dump into v4.5.
Say you have a v4.0 bank, with a pattern in part 1/track 1, another in part
1/track 2, and the pattern from part 1/track 1 saved as a ghost to part
2/track 1.
in v4.5, the pattern from part 1/track 1 becomes pattern 1. The pattern from
part 1/track 2 becomes pattern 2.
The 'ghost' pattern assignment that was on part 2/track 1 simply becomes an
assignment of pattern 1 in that location.

defaults to off after the upgrade, I think. first thing that occurred to me after I switched it on was that if I write a pattern in track one, then load it into track two & tweak it a bit, it straight away changes what's playing in track one when I exit the editor.

I think there needs to be a third option which, without user-confirmation, exits edit mode & saves the edited pattern to a new location. is it too late to get this added to the user config options?

I could see how this would get out of hand quite quickly & chew through your 64 pattern memories like a piranha in plankton... but it makes sense, no?

It does make sense, but it does eat through patterns very quickly.
If I remember, I'll have a look at this if/when I come back to v4.5
But obviously the focus is on Cirklon for the time being.

Could you firstly copy track 1 and paste it to track 2?

Then your track 2 changes will not impact track 1?

yeah, but in the heat of the moment, it takes three times as long. :-)

I reckon one of the points of the pattern pool was to make c&p less necessary. I will have to disable the auto-save for now. :-/
