Straw poll on possible sysex change

2004-01-27 by colinfraser_com

Folks,

Since the internal re-organisation of the storage in the current
version of P3, it's become possible for me to extend the range of
the Part transpose setting (PXPos) to a much wider range - something
a couple of people have asked for.
The down side is that the current sysex format for part data will
need to be changed, making older dumps incompatible (only for part
data mind - pattern and bank data will be unchanged).
Has anyone got a significant amount of backed up data yet ?
If not, I can go ahead with the change to the sysex dumps. If there
is, I can always write a little script to update any old sysex files
you may have.

Cheers,
Colin f

hi kids,

djees! can't a guy even go trash some mountains for a week without
major changes happening? ;)

um....i've got 19 P3-data SysEx dumps at the moment, of which 13
contain very different material, and four of which are currently Work-
In-Progress, with several tracks scheduled for release..and i'd
really hate to have to lose my older stuff. as i mentioned before
i've never used the PXpos-function as yet so for me the
whole 'extended range' thing isn't neccesary. so if you're going to
change the dump-format i'd really really appreciate the update script.
on the subject of scripts 'n' stuff; how much work would it be to
write the editor-utility you've mentioned before, and what would
possible programming languages be? i.e. could a flash-app. be written
for this purpose? because i'm starting to really want this, if only
to be able to move banks around between '(SysEx-dump)sets' without
having to re-program the whole bank. that would basically be the main
function of the app. for me, as all other P3-editting is definitely
done best in the P3 itself. if it can be done in Flash or Javascript
i could probably write it myself without too much trouble. other
languages i could probably get a hang of pretty quickly but i'd need
some help and it would obviously take longer.
about the new OS & Events; i like 'em! i'm really chuffed to finally
have track-mute-access from the playlist!! the Events are pretty neat
too; got some weird stuff going on here :) just to be clear; the N
in 'grab note from track N' is an internal P3 track, right? would it
be possible to 'grab' a note from an incoming Midi-channel? i ask
this as it seems my second P3 is coming close and i'd love to be able
to combine them using these funky new events :)
also, i mentioned a 'momentary' softkey/combo before, which i've kind
of re-thought. what i'd like this softkey/combo to do is toggle the
(active steps of the) AUX-tracks per track to ON, OFF, and preferably
a kind of ON WHILE HELD as well. i don't know if it's at all possible
but i think it'd be a really cool performance feature...and as it
happens i've got a couple of gigs coming up soon ;)

I have backed up some of the tracks we played at the NSC last year -
however, as I altered them during the gig the backups sound nothing
like what we started with anyway - so I'm always perfectly happy to
start from scratch, as I do with my "old" sequencers. Fortunately, I
can knock up killer P3 sequences about as quickly as I can restore
previous ones - so it's up to you.

I would certainly love to be able to do negative Xpose values (+/-12
semitones would be perfick) or Xpose/Set Xpose amount from MIDI In
maybe (slightly faster than turning a knob then hitting enter).
