I'm not so sure I wholly agree with that statement. Yes I have a nice
big modular with 9 VCO's but I also have a pair of SMS MARS synths (the
fore runner of the Spawn, without the sub Osc) and it can produce some
very full, rich sounds. This is partly because it has VC control of the
waveform allowing for more sophisticated sounds than strait PWM and it
has a nice rich filter.

True there are limits to what it can produce but with it's patchability
it's easily expanded.

As with all things it's best if you can try it first.

My 2 pence :)

I haven't used one. Having only one VCO is not enough to make bigger
sounding sounds.
None of the those synths mentioned have only one osc. The Voyager for
instance has 3.
Jacpere is correct that you could buy more.

A disadvantage to buying something smaller than an entry level modular
is you pay a fairly much to get capabilities you can only take partial
advantage of. Of course you can fix that by getting more stuff. Not that
you can't use it if it's very small, but there's a sort of critical mass
where lots of great things happen. I consider that point to be a solid
monosynth worth of modules plus a couple things not on a monosynth. Not
enough modules and you just miss out on what you can do with a more
equipped system or a decent monosynth. Then after a certiain point if
you keep getting more and more modules you probably are either addicted
and or trying to impress people ;-)
