BCR2000 & Yamaha 01V96 mixer

2009-04-10 by iliketomix

I'm attempting to use the BCR2000 to give me access to selected 01V96 aux sends,
particularly auxes 5-8 on channels 1-8, so I can do live dub reggae.

I was up and running with the BCR's learn mode pretty quickly.
I used BCManager to tweak the knob resolutions, so a quick twist snaps up the fader.
All pretty slick.

Now I'm trying to figure out if the Yamaha will respond to a data request,
so I can sync the two units up after a scene change.

The 01V96 MIDI spec has these bits that sound relevant,
but I don't actually know what I'm looking at or what to do with it.

-------------------------------------------------------
As a response to a Parameter Request, a parameter change
will be transmitted with [Rx CH] as the Device Number.

5.8.3.1.3 Parameter request basic format (01V96 only)

STATUS 11110000 F0 System exclusive message
ID No. 01000011 43 Manufacture's ID number (YAMAHA)
SUB STATUS 0011nnnn 3n n=0-15 (Device number=MIDI Channel)
GROUP ID 00111110 3E MODEL ID (digital mixer)
MODEL ID 00001101 0D 01V96
ADDRESS 0ttttttt tt Data type
0eeeeeee ee Element no.(if 'ee' is 0, 'ee' is expanded to two bytes)
           0ppppppp pp Parameter no.
           0ccccccc cc Channel no.
EOX 11110111 F7 End of exclusive

I also have a Parameter Change Format List spreadsheet
that gives me the Data Type, Element no & Parameter no.
It doesn't give me cc, the Channel no. That's not mixer channel,
and it's not the MIDI channel, so I don't know what it is.

Anyway, am I correct in thinking this is a string that should tell
the Yamaha to send out the current setting of one single item?
And that I'd have to send a message like this for
each item I'm interested in the status of?

I tried F0 43 30 3e 7f 01 23 0e 00 f7, which is Ch1 Aux5, in BCEdit's Learn Output box.
When I hold Edit and press Learn, the 01V sees MIDI, but nothing apparent happens.
A Parameter Change is different from a Control Change.
Maybe the BCF2000 doesn't see those?

Reaching in the dark here. A little information, dangerous, etc...
