First you need to work out just how much (ie how many and what parameters) you want to control. Always the hardest part.
Roland have implimented a good selection CC (continuous controller) actions in their synth since the XV series and some even before.
On the JP80 have a look at the Midi Implementation manual and you will see that it can control a hole heap of general parameters from Vol, pan etc as well as 3 Tone Modify parameters (not sure what they do in the JP80 as I don't have a JP80) as well as a few the Blender
You can turn portamento on and off as well as legato, resonance, cutoff, attack, decay, vibrato rate, delay (read LFO).and depth (LFO to Osc pitch).
All without going near Sysex. So you can program these from the BC itself.
With sysex, of course you can control all the parameters and you will need Mark's editor or if you are happy to write code , my editor.
