BC Manager Manual

I've added it to the top of my wish list. (However, I don't want to
keep everyone waiting any longer for the very imminent version 1.3.0,
so it'll probably have to wait until 1.3.1 or so...)

Strange. I can't imagine that my inbox was full, so I have no idea
what went wrong.

I have intentionally NOT included any images in the manual in order to
keep the file size as low as possible. This is important in at least
one practical sense: currently the manual is included in the BC
Manager package itself, which is getting dangerously close to the
Yahoo file limit of 5 MB. Above that, I'll have to split up the zip
file or remove the manual from the package itself.

Apart from that, I'm not quite sure whether images would make the
program less daunting: it might help certain users, but on the other
hand the manual would become a lot longer, which might add to the
dauntedness for other users, so I'd be eager to hear from other
people's experiences and opinions in this respect.

But in any case I of course wouldn't want to discourage you from
contributing to the documenation for BC Manager. I don't quite know
what you have in mind, though - couldn't you write your own "Getting
Started" manual? That would be very cool...

Mark.

Ok, that seems like a good idea, and would stay under the size limit.
I will try that and see what I come up with.

Hi Guys,

why don't you combine your talents and put an illustrated article on
the Wiki???

All the best

Well, the last few days I've been thinking a lot about the documentation
of BC Manager since Kip brought up the subject of its manual:

Personally I would really like to start reducing my weekly(/daily!) time
spent on all things related to the BCF/BCR - I really need to start
doing other things: make some music, write a novel, etc. etc.

So if anyone wants to write an illustrated article or whatever on BC
Manager: go ahead, and I'd even be willing to give feedback, but I'm not
going to write it myself.

Given all the suggestions Kip and others (including myself!) have made
for yet further improvement of BC Manager, I'll have enough work on my
hands simply working on the program itself in the near future.

Mark.

Mark,

After reading more and more of it, I really like your manual.
However, I do think that more images in the document would be great.
If you send me the manual file, I will start add some images where
appropriate.
I don't want to cut and paste from the pdf or try to rewrite the text
you have already written.
So... send me the source of the pdf, I usually render my pdfs with
open office. I don't know what you wrote the bcman manual in.
Send it and I will get to work. Or even use it as a basis for a
getting started manual.
I already captured some images of bcman to use. Just have not gotten
around to writing text...
So send me the source of the manual only.

Kip

Maybe Steve and I can do that part.

I know what you mean here, after slaving over GenMce, I needed
something else. I found this instead!
Still not making music tho...

Hmmm...

First of all: thank you for your enthousiasm, Kip! I never dreamed BC
Manager could become a movie star!

I've given this whole matter some further thought: I do appreciate
your point that the terseness and lack of graphics in the "official"
manual may cause problems for starting users. However, as I have
explained previously, for practical reasons I don't want the
"official" manual to increase in size because of added graphics, at
least not at this point in time. Secondly, since I'm continually
updating the manual, it would be very confusing to users if a kind of
"extended" version of the "official" manual started floating around on
the various websites. Moreover, we would get in an almighty editorial
tangle; and frankly, speaking for myself, I simply don't have the time
or energy for that right now. I'm having a hard enough time keeping
the manual up-to-date with all the latest program changes right now.
But if you (or anyone else) want to write a Getting Started manual/
screen movie, you have my blessing, and I might even give feedback etc.

Best wishes,
Mark.

Ok - I understand.
Thanks again, for all your hard work!

I understand both sides. Personally, I'd like to see something w/graphics, so I have this suggestion:

Mark, you keep publishing your manual w/o any images.

Kip: You get the .DOC file from Mark. At that point you can add your own screenshots and comments, then you can either save the new DOC and post it, or if you are able to host web pages, Word will let you save your document as a web page. The post a notice here on the availability and where to get it.

There are some great programming tutorials on YouTube already. Why not one (or more) for BC Manager?

Re: BC Manager Manual

2008-06-17 by k5kip_1999

Done -
Will post again, in a bit, it is rendering, then I have to upload.
It's a bit long 10+ mins! No sound, only text and video.
Ah well, there is always fast forward!
At this point it is what I know. I did not touch the bcl editor yet.
Also, I may do another on capturing sysex, with more detail.

Hey Kip,

Nice job and an A+ for effort, but you won't have much luck with text on YouTube. They have such low-res graphics, it won't be legible.

You could do it as HTML or Wiki if it's text, and just provide the audio as an mp3. Put that on the webpage maybe.

The web page is awesome!!

I don't know if the site mentioned under Links is down temporarily or permanently, but in any case the videos are in our Files section:
