alternative to huskerview for BCR2000 ?

alternative to huskerview for BCR2000 ?

2010-06-20 by OlliK

Is there any alternative to huskervu I can use as display emulation for my BCR2000 ?

It's basically working ok, but sometimes I get runtime errors which I assume to be because of huskervu. Plus it's quite old, relies on Net Framework and doesn't seem to be developed anymore.

I use it together with Reaper in MCU mode.
My setup is:

In Reaper:
Midi Input: BCR2000[1]
Midi output: Out to Midi Yoke:1

In HuskerVu:
Midi Input: In from Midi Yoke 1
Midi output: BCR2000[1]

Given this setup, I suppose I can't use the software displays which are made for the BCF (eg Behringer's BCFView or the ones that are here in the files section) because they don't have Midi out ? Or is there a way ?

I've also seen some posts about developing a cross-platform display
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bc2000/message/950
is there already anything available ?

Thanks.

I think you can forget about using BCFview for the BCR2000: as far as I know, BCFview only works with SysEx messages specifically mentioning the BCF2000.

I have no idea if anything has ever come out of that discussion.
At the time I didn't get involved, since I was too busy developing BC Manager.
However, a few months ago I developed a utility (as part of BC Manager) that works exactly like BCFview. So the next version of BC Manager will include this feature.
I've now looked at Huskervu: it seems to work exactly like BCFview, except that it responds to Mackie SysEx messages rather than BCF2000 SysEx messages. So it should be very easy for me to include a Huskervu-like utility in BC Manager as well.
However, I have a very busy life, so I can't promise anything: it might take me a week, a month or a year...

Best wishes,
Mark.

I haven't used huskerview and I don't know that much about it, but just a FYI... if it was written with .NET, it's pretty easy to disassemble it and look at it's code. There's a tool called .NET Reflector (http://www.red-gate.com/products/reflector/) which is able to browse a .NET assembly (.EXE or .DLL). As long as the assembly wasn't obvuscated, it's pretty easy to take a look at the code.

Thanks for reply.

You're right.
I made a test using BCFView as display for the BCR and it simply shows nothing. :(
I also think that you're right in your analysis that Huskervu simply translates Mackie sysex messages.

Really looking forward to your utility.
Unfortunately I couldn't help with programming but would be glad to beta-test etc.

If I may give a pointer, I especially like this modded BCFView version, because I think the 1-8 subdivision is quite handy.

see pic here:

And thanks a lot for BC Manager btw, it's getting good use here. :)

Re: alternative to huskerview for BCR2000 ?

2010-06-22 by OlliK

Thanks.
Good to know for the coders out there. (I'm unfortunately not....)

and a update on the subject:

Shortly after posting my question here about an alternative to Huskervu I stumbled over this:

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=33741

It has a Mackie display emulation build in.
I've only done little testing but it seems to work quite well so far.

So might be that the journey is over :)

PS:
As this was an .exe file to download, it was automatically blocked on my computer at first (WinXP SP3). I had to rightclick and unblock it to work correctly, so it could write a .ini file to remember it's settings.

Mark,
I have the source for huskervu, if it will help you.
I would ask for something stand alone from bcmanager.
My keymce could use such a utility as well.
I would also ask, if possible for something open source so others can build it.
My preference would be for java so it could run cross platform.
I know all of that is alot to ask.
It never hurts to ask.
My biggest request is for stand alone.
Mackie display.
Steven sound studies did something in vb.
He dropped off the earth.
I have the exe, no source, he has not given me permission to share it tho.
If we find him, maybe he will let it go.
And we can build on what he as already done.

Just in case it got overlooked in my other reply, here's another Mackie display emu which might be worth looking at:

(dunno if the dev is still available though)

Hey all,

I have the source for huskervu from husker, if there are coders that want to develop something, open source/free, email me.
Maybe I should look at that again.

I still believe it should be something cross platform.
Java?

Unfortunately, my coding is limited to autohotkey.
Keymce was done with autohotkey, alas it is not cross platform.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't need it - at least not for any version of Huskervu incorporated in BC Manager: as I wrote abt. a week ago, I have already incorporated a kind of BCFview in the next version of BC Manager, and what Huskervu does is nearly identical: the only difference being the SysEx message format: different manufacturer ID, different command, and that's it...

Yes, I can understand the usefulness of a standalone utility doing this. In fact, isn't this exactly what Huskervu provides? (OlliK complained about runtime errors, but are these errors really THAT bad?)

The Huskervu-like utility within BC Manager is now basically working.
However, I'm not sure how easy it would be to turn this into a standalone utility (this is all a matter of boring user interface details), but I'll see what I can do.

I'm not a Java programmer, so I can't help in this respect.

Best wishes,
Mark.
