Question regarding Mountain Utilities apps

Question regarding Mountain Utilities apps

2011-12-20 by oversampler

I have recently purchased a BCR2000 & I also own an R8, I am on Mac OSX.

Your apps look like they are quite handy, I downloaded the BC Manager before I realised it was Windows only, are the Mac versions of your apps for these bits of kit coming soon?

Regards

Search the forum ... You will be pleasantly surprised when you find how to do it

I mean .. the question is "does the BC Manager work on Mac".

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bc2000/message/3496

The search button is made for this sort of thing right?

ANS: If you run wine .. yes you can get BC Manager to work on mac.

I have found a link to get BCEdit working properly now, I'll read through the link you have posted to see if I can manage to get BC Manager working.

Thanks for pointing me towards it, this is the only Yahoo group I've ever seen before so I'm not great at navigating my way round it - I did a search before asking but didn't see the thread you posted. It was that search which enabled me to get BCEdit working.

ah, I see: the pleasant surprise of finding out how to use the forum search, not BC Manager on Mac!

I gave up on BCEdit early on, and find nothing pleasant about wine.
However I've had good mileage out of the bcrtool.py script and SysEx Librarian.

have fun,

Re: Question regarding Mountain Utilities apps

Ok

I've tried using wine to run BC Manager - I got the app running but it wouldn't recognise the BCR2000, I tried a few different things but it was a non starter.

I did however have a lot more success with bcrtool.py script & SysEx Librarian, thanks for the hint.

I've been able to assign all parameters but one - a switch to turn chorus on & off on my juno. I was trying to assign it to one of the buttons in the row beneath the top row of encoders on the bcr2000, I've made the assignment but when I press the button nothing happens.

Any ideas?

PS. I'm a musician not a software engineer

No sure about mac.

On linux IIRC I had to load a driver under the wine (probably the behringer ones).

Either that, or I also had to mess with the ALSA stuff.

If I get a chance later tonight (still at work) I will see if I can recall what I did. I just recall the euphoria of being able to use this thing on both NT and linux. I _dont_ think I was simply creating templates ... pretty positive I was IOing to the beast.

great, well done!

Try using something like MIDI Monitor [1] (great app) to see what messages are sent.
Capture the message from the bcr and see if that matches what you think it should be.
If possible capture a message going from the Juno (if it sends them out), your DAW, or some other verified source, and compare.

I hardly know Wine, but the message in the archive mentioned by Steve suggests that it is possible.

In any case: if BC Manager doesn't recognize the BCR, this can only mean that there is no (USB-based) MIDI I/O driver for the BCR installed under Wine. Like any other MIDI application, BC Manager can only use whatever MIDI I/O drivers Windows (or Wine) provides.

From experience I do know that it is possible to connect a BCR to BC Manager within a Windows guest OS under VirtualBox - at least on a Windows host, but my understanding is that this should also work on a Mac OSX host.
(I think several people have reported that BC Manager can also be run via Parallels on OSX. Does this work in a similar way as VirtualBox?)

Of course setting up a full Windows guest OS involves a bit more work than using Wine.
For starters, you of course have to install Windows (from an installation disc or iso file).
Then, to make the BCR available to the guest OS, you have to instruct VirtualBox to install its generic "pass-through" USB driver on the host; this driver passes on the USB signals from/to the actual BCR to/from the guest OS.
Finally, within the guest OS you must install the USB driver for the BCR (see Behringer's BCR webpage), just as you would under a "normal" Windows OS.
In my experience, to get this working is always a messy process, involving rebooting the guest OS, switching the BCR off and on etc., until finally it somehow works.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

The "Plans" page of the Mountain Utilities website mentions "2012" for "Misc." applications. This was indeed meant to include BC Manager, but right now this is all very much in doubt:

BC Manager (like all my programs) is written in Delphi.
The latest version of Delphi (released last year) finally allows the creation of Mac OSX applications.
However, the conversion of BC Manager's source code may take something like 500 hours, and I simply don't have that much time in the near future, if ever.
So right now I'm seriously thinking about abandoning the whole idea of writing any Mac OSX versions.
Even in the most optimistic scenario (i.e. if several bottlenecks turn out to be not so bad), a Mac version of BC Manager is at least something like 6 months away.
The worst-case scenario is that it will never come to be.
I'll keep you all informed.

Mark.

All that sounds a bit full on TBH, I'd rather not have to install any other types of OS on my system if I can help it.

I've pretty much nailed what I wanted to do by using the SysEx Librarian, I've got the BCR controlling a virtual PG300 I've created in the Logic environment which in turn is connected to my Juno, the leds are matching the positions of any sliders which have a value range of 0-127 it's all looking quite slick. The virtual PG300 is unnecessary, I'm only hooked up to it so I can dbl check I'm setting up the BCR correctly.

I've figured out why the chorus on/off switch won't work - it only responds to value 0 or 1. There's also a few other controls which only use short value ranges (0-3 & 0-5)

Have you guys got any idea how to limit the ranges of SysEx controls within the BCR?

I've tried to go in using the "Edit" button when I turn the encoders for val 1 & val 2 I get a blank screen - encoder 1 shows "SPC" for the data type but apart from the led options none of the other encoders are offering any editing.

I've had quite a learning curve with this particular bit of kit over the past couple of days but I feel like I'm almost there with it.

Many thanks for all your help so far
