Having problems getting BCR2000 and JX-8P working together

Having problems getting BCR2000 and JX-8P working together

2012-11-14 by bamajawn

I am fairly new to MIDI and have been trying to have my BCR control my JX-8P. I've read the various manuals, posts, and experimented a lot, but am having trouble getting the two connected. I've probably missed something obvious and am hoping that someone can help. I read the answer to a previous question about using a DAW to direct the synth to the BCR, but I'd like to be able to control my synth in stand-alone mode.

I have the BCR connected to my computer via USB. The firmware is current at 1.10. The connection to the JX is:

JX MIDI out > BCR MIDI in > BCR MIDI out > JX MIDI in

First, I downloaded the JX-8P profile from this site. Using BC Manager, I sent the profile to the BCR. After the send, my BCR lights changed on P-16 and P-32. I believe this indicates a successful upload. All the BC Manager testing indicated that the BCR was recognized and connected.

Next, I set the JX to receive on MIDI channel 16 and used P-16 on the BCR:

MIDI button on JX > edit slider to 16 > Write

However, the BCR does not seem to be communicating with the synth. Turning knobs doesn't change the tone, nor does the JX display change. What have I missed? Thanks in advance for your help. Once I solve this, I feel that I can get my JV-1080 connected as well.

Have you put the BCR in one of the standalone modes? I believe I always use S-2 but ain't sure. Check the manual to see which output the BCR will send its own data on, and connect the JX to that output.
Do you see the MIDI lights flickering at all when you turn a knob?

Also, the JX-8P must be set to receive SysEx. After all is set properly on the JX, save the MIDI settings by entering the MIDI mode and pressing Write.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Rainer (creator of the profile you're trying to get to work)
