how to send messages?

can anybody help a real BCR newbie to send it some of these strange messages à la "$encoder 49 .showvalue 1 ...."?
i'm trying to do so with max msp but as a matter of fact any clue on how to start / initialise such a message and in which format (hex? binary?) to send it would be of great help.
