BCR with jx8p (or other synth)- extracting "pot positions" from patch?

2016-03-27 by thunberg.jonas@...

Found an old thread here regarding how to get the BCR's lights to indicate the values of their controlled parameters as a new patch is loaded. As I understood it, the synth would communicate this information in sysex, but the BCR would need to get it in CC, so you would need to a have a computer as an interface in between, with some kind of software running that would "translate" the message.

Anyone tried this? I don't know anything of how this would actually be done, however considering it is only about 40 parameters, it does not seem like it would be very difficult, if you knew the formatting of the synths sysex and the formatting of CC messages?

And it seems really inconvenient to have a laptop just for "translation", perhaps it would be possible to program an arduino or other microprocessor, if it's possible to solder midi ins and outs on one?

Hi
yes I have some conversion programs for DW6000 and DW8000 and Yamaha TQ5 (might work on other 4 op FM synths). It was an attempt to make the BCR as if were part of the synth.
You will find videos and the programs on Royce Craven

I believe there are others that have done this 'machine in the middle' conversion program with a micro-controller of some sort.

Funny, I just discovered your web page a few days ago in relation to BCR2000 -> DW-8000. But this thread also caught my eye as I still have a JX-3P from 1984. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I'm just happy to know that someone has done work on interfacing with these great old synths.

I have just acquired a cheap broken JX-8P. Stripped and rebuilt what was needed which wan't much.

I had forgotten just how relatively simple things were, so I had contemplated re-writing the ROM to put out CC values for each of the parameters as there are only a few (much less that 127) and it would work seamlessly with the BCR.

From the Internet, I gather the ROM is a bit of a mess and there is someone else re-writing it following on from Fred Vecoven's work on the similar JX10. So perhaps I'll wait.

In the mean time, for the editor I decided to go the iPad way.

I have an old iPad 2 and I have a second hand Alesis iDock which works well, but the poor engineers at Alesis couldn't (or wouldn't) work out how to send sysex. Very secretive about details and not very forthcomming with help. No more Alesis for me.

I could have bought a simple iPad Midi Interface, but I had a rush of blood to the head and bought a factory refurbished (looks new to me) Behringer iStudio iS202.

Slid the iPad in. Popped the iStudio on the JX-8P (a bit bigger that the Alesis unfortunately)
Grabbed copy of iPG-800 from the App Store and all is good.

The JX-P8 not only puts out a patch change message, but dumps it's very small sysex patch data every time you press a patch select button the synth. (Sysex out has to be on)

This is lucky because you can't call the current patch sysex remotely.

It is great to have a semi analog again as I missed my Jupiter 8 nearly as soon as I sold it to buy a DX7.
Believe it or not I bought the JP8 new with a bank loan when I was a uni student - who lends to a student?
Paid it off gigging and pouring beers in a pub.

So far the JX-8P setup has proved to be very enjoyable.

All the best
Royce
